🥋 Traditional karate. Practical skills. A "never give up" spirit 💪🏻

Shotokan Karate Club Tasmania are a traditional Japanese karate dojo focused on practical self-defence, discipline and cultivating an indomitable spirit. Our training aims to build confidence and resilience that students can carry into everyday life, not just the dojo. We are big on Japanese etiquette.

We are all about integrity and transparency so, before joining, here are a few things to know:

• 1. We are not a daycare:
Our classes are fun and engaging for kids, but karate is the main focus. If you're looking for somewhere to drop children off simply to run around and play games, we may not be the right fit.

• 2. Contact is a part of training:
You are going to get hit. We practise full contact karate, with training kept controlled and supervised. Students should understand that they may get hit during training. Karate is a martial art, not a sport. If the idea of occasionally taking a tap is a deal-breaker, this may not be the dojo for you.

• 3. We expect effort:
Karate can be challenging and we ask students to give their best, even when training gets tough. We work to develop perseverance and a “never give up” attitude that can help students throughout life. There's no "I need to go the bathroom" as an excuse to get out of a hard part of training. Students are expected to try their best and give effort.

• 4. Discipline starts at home:
Many people think bringing their kid to karate will suddenly make them more disciplined, while this can certainly help, discipline starts at home. If you let your child get away with everything at home and they are only being disciplined while in the dojo it is not going to work out as every lesson we are starting back at day one. Karate can support a child's discipline, but it can't replace it. Progress is much harder when expectations at the dojo aren't supported at home. Consistency between the two makes a real difference.

• 5. Belts are earned:
We don't grade students according to a fixed time frame. Training, effort and progress matter. When the sensei believes a student is ready, they may be invited to grade. All gradings require approval from the Shotokan Karate-Do International Association in Japan. Some students may progress faster than others. Students are expected to train hard, be patient and when they are ready, sensei will tell them.

If you're ready to train, learn, grow and practise real karate, then send us a message to claim your FREE trial class 👊🏻🥋

Kihon (基本) means "basics" in Japanese. In karate, it refers to the repetitive practice of basic techniques, stances, blocks, punches, kicks, knees, elbows and other strikes. It builds proper body alignment, muscle memory and power! Osu! 👊🏻🥋
