Almost no one is walking the streets with a sword anymore (I wish I could have just said “no one” 😬), so why do martial arts involving the sword still exist or include the weapon in our training?

There are a few reasons for it, first being the one most people give; tradition. But there are more practical reasons too.

Training sword forms (kata, toulou or taolu) can build coordination, mobility, and strength with heavier weapons. Like any weapon or open-hand form, it can increase our physical conditioning and endurance. It’s about the athleticism we gain from training.

The other thing we gain is, especially from weapon based martial arts like Kali or Silat, learning how to use a weapon greatly increases your ability to defend against it. You still need to learn and practice the defensive techniques, but to make them most effective, you need to understand how the weapon you’re defending against actually works.

These are the main reasons we continue to train with the sword in our martial arts.
Are these the reasons you train with a sword or blade, or are there other reasons you do so?

Sunday marked 1 year since our grand opening.
Today marks 1 year since our first classes began and the first students walked through our doors.

It’s been a very eventful 12 months,
with big changes and a lot of growth.
It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our students, families, and community.
Thank you all.

We’re looking forward to many more years to come. 🔵🐺🥋

Breathing is important for any physical activity or exercise; OBVIOUSLY 😂 It’s literally how we stay alive 😮‍💨 But it’s especially important for any fighting style 🥋 In a real world encounter you can’t defend yourself if you’re out of breath, and in a competition you can’t pause a round just to catch your breath. There are many different techniques to breathing while in conflict, but regardless of the technique you use, your lungs and diaphragm must be just as strong as any muscle in your body. In Kung Fu we train ‘Qigong Breathing’ as part of many of our forms. Many people miss the real purpose. Even within the arts, many people are taught the technique is about breathing in a fight, but as any fighter can tell you, that’s not how it’s done. Our Qigong Breathing is simply an exercise to strengthen the lungs and diaphragm, making our breathing techniques in fights easier and more effective.
