It’s never too late to start exercising, build muscle and movement capacity!

My Dad, pictured here with my daughter, came to Cairns last October. His ability to walk anything beyond than 50-100 metres was severely lacking and he struggled to get himself up out of a chair. I gave him a few basic exercises that I thought he could do when he returned home down south. That motivated him to get a more comprehensive program from the Physiotherapist attached to his independent living village which involved strengthening his legs, arms, hips, back, and more. Plus he embarked on a daily program of taking a walk outside with his walker.

As a movement professional, the transformation I see in him is nothing short of remarkable. Back again in Cairns to celebrate his 95th birthday, Dad has walked and walked and walked (easily over a kilometre on a couple of occasions) and is better able to rise to stand and get down to sit.

My point is that it’s never to late to start strength training and building movement capacity. Although it’s better to start young, you can do it at any age.

The β€œKnees Over Toes Touch Down Squat” on a slantboard is an intermediate level exercise that helps to strengthen the muscles which cross the front of your knee joint as well as your hips. It is one of my personal β€œgo to” exercises for whenever I have inside knee pain. Excellent work by .nicole last night! πŸ˜„πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ¦΅πŸ»πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ‘

β€œStick behind the head” exercise is incredibly hard but a great way to strengthen your shoulders and upper back. It also is a great β€œantidote” to all the forward arm positions many of spend the majority of our days in. Great job by all the students in this recent Functional Mat Pilates class! πŸ˜„πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺ🏻

A great way to strengthen your shoulders and improve your shoulder joint stability is to include various β€œbottoms up” kettlebell exercises in your program. Here .nicole very ably demonstrates β€œOpen the Window Shutters”. Great job Tertia! πŸ˜„πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
