One for the cycling geeks 🤓📚
We came across a new research paper from Flinders University, involving Olympic cyclist and medicine student Sophie Edwards, that looks at supplements for cycling performance and recovery, and a couple of things caught our attention.
One was beetroot juice.
It’s a source of dietary nitrate, which helps improve how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise. The interesting part is that the biggest performance benefits are seen in recreational to moderately trained cyclists, not elites, so it’s likely more relevant to most of us than we might expect!
The other was menthol, and how it could help with training and racing in hot conditions.
The research looked at menthol for its cooling sensation. It doesn’t actually lower your body temperature, but it can make you feel cooler, which may help reduce discomfort and keep you working harder for longer in the heat. Some studies showed improved performance when used during efforts, particularly in hot environments.
There’s a bit of caution with it though, as that cooling feeling can mask how hot you really are.
There’s plenty more in the paper, but these were a couple of relevant findings that stood out to us.
We know there are a few in our community who enjoy digging into this kind of detail, so we thought we’d share > https://bit.ly/4u5BHlR

The 2026 AusCycling State Road Championships (Queensland) are heading to Mackay this July and it’s a great chance to get behind road racing in North Queensland.
A huge effort from Mackay Cycling Club to host an event of this scale. It’s no small job pulling together a full State Championships weekend, so it would be great to see strong support from across the region.
There are events right across the board, from U9, U11, U13, U15, U17, U19, U23, Elite, Masters and Para, so plenty of opportunities to get involved.
Racing runs 3–5 July 2026
FRI | Individual Time Trial
SAT | Road Race
SUN | Criterium
We already have a strong group of Cairns riders planning the trip. If you’re thinking about heading down, reach out. Happy to help connect people, share info or coordinate where we can.
Give Mackay Cycling Club a follow to stay up to date and keep an eye out for when entries open.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Annual General Meeting tonight, and to those who sent their apologies.
We’re pleased to introduce the Cairns Cycling Club Committee for 2026:
President – Tim Jackson
Vice President – Rodney Larcombe
Secretary – Sue Helmke
Treasurer – Vicky Johnston
Committee Members – David Hutton, Greg Hutton and Abi Gardiner
A big thank you to outgoing committee members Tanya Rodney and Leah Horstmann for their contribution over the past year. We appreciate the time and effort you’ve given to the club and look forward to your continued involvement.
A new committee is a great opportunity to refresh our focus and set the direction for the year ahead. We’ll be in touch soon with updates on what’s planned.
PS. We promise the meeting wasn’t quite as serious as everyone looks in this photo.

Another week ahead at the track and a full schedule ready to roll (weather permitting of course!).
Who else is ready for this rain to stop so we can get properly back into it?
A reminder that our AGM is on Monday night. Please come along and show your support for the club, it’s a great chance to hear what’s happening and help shape the year ahead.
And a huge congratulations to all of our members and Cairns cyclists who tackled the epic Peaks Challenge today. What an effort. We couldn’t be prouder of you all.
Check the schedule, book your sessions, and we’ll see you out there.
