π SAINTS 6TH GRADE ARE PREMIERS! π
The two-man show of James Shepherd and Luke Mathyssen have led St. Aidans to the 6th Grade Premiership. In an excellent Grand Final against Montagu Bay, Shepherd and Mathyssen combined with the Bat and Ball to give the Saints an 18 Run win at Cambridge Oval.
Sent in by Montagu Bay on a dewy outfield, Shepherd had all the luck in the world after been put down in the field at least 5 times (maybe more). Shepherd punished the Montagu Bay attack around the ground hitting x6 4s and x5 6s in his aggressive 85 off 44 balls.
Joined by Marcus Lyne at the top, Lyne was solid but could not get going and despite breaking his bat, the Saints had 67 on the board after 10 overs. Lyne missed a full toss on the stumps and was out for 10.
Sam Gray at 3 joined Shepherd and immediately put his opening 2 balls for 4 but was out shortly after for 15 with the score on 97.
Luke Mathyssen then joined Shepherd to build on Shepherd's momentum. The warm day started to get to Shepherd and with 3 figures in sight, suffered from cramps and the Sharks finally got their man for 85.
Mathyssen tried to build momentum with the rest of Saints order but with five batters scoring ducks, it was left to Mathyssen to knuckle down and be 57 not out.
Montagu Bay was penalised 4 overs for slow over rate which meant 36 overs to chase 206.
The Saints bowlers had a shaky start, but Charlie Wolfe-Wright broke through the 3rd over with the middle stumped removed to take out the opener. The Sharks were 1-30 after 5 when a loose ball from Wolfe-Wright was dispatched by Opener Akshay Tickoo to the short boundary. With composure, Sam Gray duly accepted the gift to leave the Sharks without the grades leading run scorer.
Mathyssen was brought on after 8 overs and in scenes that would go down in many who witnessed, Mathyssen's first ball got a faint edge from T. Singh to Riley Dare's right side. The skip's reflexes and mobility saw him take one of most important catches in Saints modern history. Just ask him.
Mathyssen was rolling and with wickets in the 11th and 15th over, the Sharks were 5-77 with Mathyssen having 3-9 after 4 overs.
To the Sharks credit, they saw off the spell from Justin Wigmore and looked to increase the run rate through the middle overs. The Saints over rate was under threat which brought James Shepherd into the attack to quicken the pace (and yes take wickets).
The Shepherd 26th over was the match turner with Matthew Szkup taking a sharp chance at short mid-wicket to remove Mackey and a soft pop-up a couple of balls later removing the dangerous Finearty. Once Chris Mackey was removed by Shepherd through a skied pull to the keeper Dick, the Sharks were 8-144.
The Sharks made one final push for victory with Wolfe-Wright going the journey twice in the 29th over leaving a run a ball thriller in the last 5 overs.
However, the Shepherd/Dick combination was back with stumping of Luke Kearney in the 34th over with 26 still required, snuffing out the Sharks chances.
Shepherd with 4 wickets and the Man of Match medal was all his.
Matthew Szkup was clutch at the death and skittled Brkic to send the Saints into jubilation and relief at the same time.
The Saints win by 18 runs. π
The Club is looking forward to celebrating all three teams' success at the Awards Night on May 2. Watch out for more information here soon.
GO SAINTS!
