I’m having the final drink of my 5 day juice fast tonight, a glass of unsweetened almond milk, before gently introducing food again tomorrow morning.
Almond milk is a gentle way to finish this style of fast. It’s light on the digestive system while providing some healthy fats and vitamin E.
So, why do I fast?
For me, it’s an opportunity to give my digestive system a break from processing heavier foods and allow my body time to rest and reset.
During a juice fast, I’m still receiving vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from fresh fruit and vegetable juices, while reducing the usual digestive load.
Fasting may also support:
• The body’s natural cellular repair and clean-up processes
• Insulin sensitivity and metabolic health
• Reduced inflammation and a healthier inflammatory response
• Reduced bloating
• A greater awareness of true hunger versus eating from habit
• A quieter mind around food
I also tend to notice clearer eyes, brighter skin and a deeper appreciation for simple, nourishing food when I begin eating again.
Every fasting experience is different.
Sometimes it’s challenging, and sometimes it feels like a breeze. Sometimes I have plenty of energy and a completely clear mind. Other times, my energy is lower and focusing feels difficult.
This time, I felt good throughout most of the five days. I think completing a 4 day fast only a few weeks ago helped my body and mind adjust more easily, especially after having a longer break between fasts beforehand.
I slept well, continued working and trained on four of the five days. On the day my body told me it needed more rest, I listened. I slept, skipped training and took a gentle walk through the rice fields instead.
One of the biggest differences this time was how much quieter the food noise became.
There were a couple of moments when I felt tired, but they passed.
Rest is also really important when fasting, especially if you’re new to it. It isn’t about punishment or pushing through. It’s about slowing down, paying attention and responding to what your body needs.
5 days complete. Now I’m looking forward to gently nourishing my body again tomorrow as I break my fast.
Fasting can support the body’s natural repair and healing processes, but it isn’t suitable for everyone and depends on a range of individual health factors.
Having the right guidance and support is important, as is how you prepare beforehand and gently reintroduce food afterwards.
