📍 Partnachklamm Loop with Kids

Narnia has nothing on the Partnachklamm in winter ❄️

What started as a normal gorge walk turned into a spontaneous loop - and it made the whole day even more special.

After leaving the gorge, we followed the signs toward the Graseckbahn 🚠 and walked along the Partnach river. At the trail fork, we turned left and climbed a narrow, snowy path through a quiet winter forest, where snow‑covered pines and the white trail made everything feel magical.

Halfway up, we reached the Wettersteinblick suspension bridge, which quickly became a highlight. The boys loved crossing it, and the views over the valley were incredible.

Soon after, the trail opened onto a plateau. We made a short detour to Almwirtschaft Hanneslabauer, where the boys tried Kaiserschmarrn with apple sauce for the first time and absolutely loved it.

After the traditional snack stop, we took the Graseckbahn back down into the valley and walked the last stretch to the car.

The loop is just under 6 km and took us around 3 hours from start to finish. We highly recommend it! Winter was breathtaking, and we can only imagine how beautiful it must be in summer with clear mountain views and a beer garden stop.

This Australia day, we celebrate all things Australia 🪃 🇦🇺 🦘

✨️We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
We recognise the First Peoples of this Nation and their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to the lands, waters, seas, skies, and communities.

Australia Day hike suggestion: Birrigai Time Trail
Birrigai Time Trail is an amazing short 3km loop in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

This trail visits one of the oldest known rock shelters in the Alps region, used by the Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

The loop trail starts at the car park near the visitor centre and follows a management trail through open grassland. After about 1km the track takes a left turn into an eucalyptus forest. The narrow trail winds its way uphill past granite boulders.

Highlight of the walk is definitely walking through and in between those giant boulders before reaching the rock shelter.

Before heading back to the visitor centre, be sure to look through the trees into the Tidbinbilla Valley. The view is simply stunning! The trail back descends through open grassland with the Tidbinbilla Ranges forming a dramatic backdrop and Kangaroos everywhere.

After the walk, we recommend visiting the Nature Discovery Playground for an Aussie post-hike BBQ post.

Happy Australia Day 🇦🇺🪃🦘

Is this not the most rewarding hike in Mount Buffalo National Park?

📍The Cathedral - Hump Track is a relatively short but challenging 2km one way hike, but every bit worth it!

The climb up to the Cathedral is on a well formed but steepish rocky path with occasional steps and rock slabs to cross. In parts, the path veers close to steep drop offs, therefore we recommend taking it slow and have the kids close by.

The Cathedral ‘tor’ is absolutely stunning and one of Mount Buffalo’s most iconic granite formations.

From there, you follow the small orange markers to the Hump. Through alpine wattles and snow gums, you climb your way over granite slabs and loose boulders to the peak, which is situated at 1695 meters in elevation. The 360 degree views over the Mount Buffalo plateau with its craggy granite peaks, Cresta Valley and the Horn are breathtaking.

Hike Facts:
🚙 Cathedral Picnic Area
🥾 1.9km one way
📈 Difficult due to terrain

Make sure to save this post. You don't want to miss out on this hike 😉

Start small, start brave! Don't let limited experience hold you back from hiking with kids ✨️

● Begin with short, easy trails
● Research kid-friendly routes
● Pack smart and prep ahead
● Focus on fun, not perfection - it doesn't matter if you turn around after 15mins! Celebrate the small wins. Celebrate venturing outdoors
● Join a hiking group in your local area
● Ask a friend to join you for a hike. If they have children - even better. Hiking buddies are so much fun and add an extra layer of excitement!
● Ask grandparents to come! We all know they bring the best snacks for both their children and grandchildren 😂

❗️Here's another option:
We don't always do crazy long hikes….

🪨📍Legoland car park is open!

📣 Orroral Ridge Road has been reopened since we've done this hike.

Meaning you can drive all the way to Legoland car park! Cutting out approx 5,5km of walking distance from Honeysuckle Campground.

From that car park, it's roughly 500m along the ridge on a small path through scrubs and regrowth before you reach Legoland.
From there, the views into Orroral Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges are nothing less than spectacular.

Entering and exploring the main cavern with its high ceiling and little side caverns was the best. Looking up you can see a vast range of different sized boulders wedged in places. Just like Lego when you drop it and it lands in all different shapes.

Before you go, always check the ACT Parks website for potential road closures.

Make sure to hit the save button as this hike is a must when visiting Canberra.

Canberra Balloon Spectacular

If you are in Canberra and haven't watched the Balloon Spectacular yet - GO!
It's only on until the 17th March. Balloons launch each morning from Patrick White Lawns at around 6.15am.

We've recently watched the Balloons from the lawns of the Canberra Yacht Club with views of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, the National Museum of Australia and Black Mountain. And it was spectacular.

If you are planning on having a breakfast picnic by the lake, don't forget a blanket. Mornings can be a bit chilly.
