In a grand spectacle that unfolded at the O’Connor ground, the CMCC Tuskers and the Conquerors clashed in the highly anticipated ACT Sunday Social A Grand finals.
The crucial toss fell in favor of the Tuskers, who elected to bowl first, setting the stage for a thrilling finals.
Sebastian and Nithin, entrusted with the new ball, unfurled a masterclass in precision and discipline. Their tight lines, complemented by a display of impeccable fielding, stifled the Conquerors, forcing them into a sluggish start. The Tuskers' strategy bore fruit early on, with the top three Conquerors' wickets tumbling within the first 12 over.
However, just when it seemed the Conquerors were on the backfoot, a resilient fightback ensued in the middle overs. Spirited partnerships emerged, breathing life into their innings. Just as the Tuskers' grip on the game began to loosen, the dynamic Rohith Radhakrishnan intervened, leaving an indelible mark on the contest. In a breathtaking turn of events, Rohith's double strike in his very first over swung the pendulum back in favor of the Tuskers.
As the innings hurtled towards its conclusion, the Tuskers' bowling unit, led by the exceptional trio of Sebastian, Don, and Rohith, orchestrated a masterclass. Sebastian's spell of 8 overs yielded three crucial wickets, Don's tenacity earned him two scalps in 4.3 overs, and Rohith's incisive bowling carved out two wickets in his four-over spell. The Conquerors, valiant in their efforts, succumbed to the relentless Tuskers' attack, ultimately bowing out in the 35th over with a total of 168 runs.
Ravi and Jesvin the opening duo for Tuskers had to deal with fast and swinging deliveries from the opening bowlers of the Conquerors. Conquerors' opening bowlers unleashed a fiery atmosphere on the pitch. Despite the challenging start, Ravi and Jesvin, carefully navigated through the storm of deliveries, ensuring they weathered the early onslaught.
But then, things changed quickly as the Tuskers lost two wickets one after another, and found themselves in a bit of danger. Ravi and Vivian teamed up and their partnership ensured there are no further loss of wickets at that stage. The thrill and excitement reached their highest point just before the break when Ravi got out in a dramatic run-out, adding a suspenseful twist to the grand final.
Amidst the ensuing drama, the Tuskers found themselves on shaky ground, losing three wickets rapidly and teetering at 82/6. Enter the skipper, Don, who joined forces with Vivian, leading the Tuskers on a stirring comeback. Their remarkable partnership steered the team closer to the elusive target, setting the stage for a nail-biting climax.
Yet, the finals script unfolded another twist as Vivian departed when the Tuskers needed 49 runs from 40 balls. Don, the unwavering captain, held his ground, and alongside Sumith, the vice-captain, they skillfully guided the team within touching distance of the total. The 39th over brought both jubilation and heartbreak as Don departed, leaving the Tuskers needing 11 runs off 8 balls with just two wickets in hand.
In a moment that seemed to defy cricketing logic, the seasoned Rohith R took center stage, joining forces with Sumith to etch a thrilling finale in the annals of the game. Tuskers required 9 runs from the final over, and Rohith's vintage strokeplay, culminating in a timely boundary, ensured they crossed the finish line with just one ball to spare.
The last overs unfolded as a rollercoaster of emotions, with stress, amusement, and roars from the team supporters echoing through the stadium. The Tuskers emerged triumphant, clinching the A Grade Sunday Social competition for 2023-24 in a game that will be remembered for its sheer intensity and dramatic twists. A resounding applause to the entire team, and heartfelt thanks to the supporters, especially family, friends, and the All Stars players, for turning up and backing the Tuskers on their victorious journey. What a game, what a victory – the Tuskers have truly etched their names in the lore of grand finals again.
