🔍 Not All Magnesium Supplements Are the Same
Recent discussions online have highlighted the importance of looking beyond the label when choosing a magnesium supplement for your horse.
While the amount of magnesium supplied per serve is often a focus, it’s important to remember that the form of magnesium is just as important as the quantity provided.
Magnesium is involved in normal nerve and muscle function and is commonly included in calming supplements. However, different magnesium sources are absorbed and utilised differently by the horse.
Some forms, such as magnesium oxide, are often used to help meet general dietary requirements, while magnesium protein chelates are specifically designed to improve bioavailability and absorption. This means that a smaller amount of magnesium may still be highly effective when delivered in a form the horse can utilise efficiently.
When evaluating a calming supplement, it’s also worth considering the complete formulation, including:
✔️ The source and bioavailability of magnesium
✔️ Vitamin E to support normal nerve function
✔️ Vitamin B1 (thiamine) for additional nutritional support during times of stress
✔️ Ingredients that help support digestive comfort, as many horses show signs of tension through the digestive system
Every horse is different, and nutritional requirements can vary depending on diet, workload, temperament and environment. For this reason, the “best” magnesium supplement is not always the one that provides the highest magnesium dose, but rather the one that delivers the right form and balance of nutrients for your horse’s individual needs.
If you’re unsure which option is most suitable for your horse, our nutrition team is always happy to help assess your feeding program and provide personalised advice. Kohnke's Own offer a FREE ration analysis service and have helped many horse owners to provide a balanced diet that supports the health and performance of their horses.
