This week at the Griffs we celebrate pride round proudly sponsored by our friends at Parker Coles Curtis

Being proud members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community is a core part of the ANU Griffins Culture. The round is a celebration of identity, visibility and belonging across our entire community. The LGBTQIA+ players, coaches, volunteers, supporters and families are celebrated this week, however the respect and support is upheld and shown always, no matter the week.

Another milestone to celebrate at the Griff’s as supreme leader Michael Hammill runs out for his 100th game this weekend. The first player ever picked at the club more for his aesthetic features than any athletic ability, Hammer has persevered despite his obvious limitations to be a part of three flags and countless masters teams. Most notably being the reserves premiership in 2023, where a near statless game was observed foreshadowing Billy Frampton of the Pies some one month later.

Only an intermittent presence in his early years following his 2012 debut, Hammer couldn’t stop coming back and finally consummated his long-held ambition by ascending to the presidency in a bloodless coup in 2025. Known as much for his tenacity in the boardroom as his toughness on the field, he continues the proud tradition of hard-working Griff presidents by offloading all official duties to the vice-president and footy manager so he can focus on playing football.

It might have taken 15 years but it’s been well worth the wait, congratulations Hammer on your 100th game! Thank you for your leadership, commitment and selfless attitude in giving everything for the club.

100 games, 200 goals, 4 grand finals, 2 premierships, seniors leadership group and ressies captain might not have been the Griffo’s career lined up for Jack Hadley when a fresh-faced former Jets junior stormed off and belted the subs bench at Stirling Oval in 2018. However, the mark of a man is not always in any one moment but is more in how they are willing to keep pushing to make their mark. And that passion displayed in a moment of frustration was simply a symptom of that desire in Hads. It is a desire that shows up not just on the field but in his willingness to help clubmates off the field as well. Almost nobody is as reliable as Hads to pick up the phone, whether it is to just have a chat and a check in or to assist with your local electrician needs. You can trust that Hads will make the effort to look out for you.

While he is still paying off the $500 dollars AFL Canberra insisted we pay for debuting one of Jets finest juniors, it has been a privilege to be a part of Hads journey from fiery young upstart to club veteran and father of 2. Long lung busting leads have never been Hads strong suit but if you need a physical presence to hit up for a lead in the 50, there are not many others you’d ask for across the last 10 years at the Griffs. And if you need a goal to seal your first premiership in 10 years, turns out Jack Hadley is your man; a highlight he still watches by himself on a quiet night.  
 
As his responsibilities for his family and career have grown, Hads has stepped back from playing for seniors but continues to show up for the Ressies when and where he can. 100 games in any era, is a significant contribution to any football club. In a time where season lengths have only shortened and he has begun raising 2 wonderful kids it takes significant commitment and dedication to reach. It is a contribution that he should be as proud of as many of us who have been part of his whole journey with the Griffs are of him. Long may he continue to represent the club with his characteristic determination (to score goals), passion (to score goals) and desire (to score goals from the pocket).
