Do we want a lake low in nutrients???

Flathead Lake in Montana is the clearest water on Earth.
The clarity of Flathead Lake's waters is renowned. In the summer it is often easy to see through twenty feet of the water column. The lake is so clear because it is relatively low in nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) which promote the growth of algae.

Be Wild-Life Aware on the water this Spring.

SUP is a great way to connect with and as approaches the of are getting busy preparing for their next generation !!!

Some below will help you be mindful of protecting our many birds, rakali, platypus, wombats, kangaroos, frogs, insects and fish that call Lake Burley Griffin home, as the weather warms!

1. Look out for birds and other wildlife - move further away if they become alert to your presence. Especially the beautiful Swans of Lake Burley Griffin.

2. Steer clear of islands, marshes, reed's and mud banks as these are important bird roosting and breeding sites.

3. Bird island ( Spinnaker Island ) in West Lake is going to be very busy as Spring approaches. Try not to visit the island or attempt to disembark while nesting is happening.

4. Insects and small marsupials rely on fallen wood and leaves to protect them from predators and make safe harbours for their nests. Don't be tempted to 'clear up' nature's natural homes that you are paddling past.

5. Use recommended launch and exit points around the Lake to lessen wildlife disturbance.

6. Keep a low profile around all wildlife. Paddle boarders can reduce wildlife disturbance by kneeling rather than standing. Kayakers and canoers can reduce their disturbance by lowering their paddle's angle.

7. Do not drag any equipment behind you as this can damage delicate habitats on and around the water. Dragonfly nests and breeding sites are on top of the water - don't break up a family by forgetting to tie your equipment down.

8. Always follow requests on signs and marker buoys around our Lake which will indicate sensitive areas.

Please think carefully as you enter the wildlife of our precious especially in Spring when disturbance of sensitive areas can affect survival of our animal friends!

Every day in every season, life on Lake Burley Griffin is hustling and grinding to build their family and next generation, just like you!

Have you paddled your SUP to to the yet?

The cafe; .sosta is serving hot breakfasts and coffee every weekend morning.

You can pull up and disembark your SUP right in front of the , then carry your SUP out of the way of other users onto the grass.

If there are rowers launching, it is best to pull in and disembark away from their launch. There are plenty of safe harbours on the lake bank east of the launch boards.

Plan your paddle with a stop for coffee this !

Looking for any opportunity to get out on the water over the next 5 weeks until spring hits Canberra?

Just remember the is around 6 degrees through , making it to 12 during the spring (and autumn) and only reaching the pleasant 20 degrees when our Summer is in full swing.

Don't let that stop you paddling during winter!!

On a fine, blue sky, low wind day a Winter paddle can be amazing for releasing those feel good chemicals in your body!

If in doubt knee paddling is just as much fun and reduces your chance of wobbling into the water!!!

Get involved with our pre season social paddle in August from Yarralumla Beach Sunday mornings.

There are some magnificent sunsets over the Lake to experience with all this beautiful winter weather.

But if you are hitting the water in the early mornings when our beautiful Lake is embraced by a thick fog and you can hardly see the water from the beach, you MUST have your white lights Fore and Aft !!

Early morning is rowing training on West lake maybe even a , then mid morning brings out the and & .

BE SEEN PEOPLE

Don't be a stealth SUPper!
