Despite a surge in enthusiasm driven by the success of The Matildas at the Women’s World Cup, financial challenges threaten Canberra United's existence.

Without immediate support, we risk losing this vital pillar of our community.

We are beyond proud of founding member being awarded the ACT Senior Australian of the Year for 2026.

Repost from
"Women’s football is now the number one sport for girls and women in this country.”

For Heather Reid AM, 2026 ACT Senior Australian of the Year, that progress reflects nearly five decades of work to create opportunities for women and girls in football.

From establishing the ANU Women’s Soccer Club in 1978 to shaping the ACT Women’s Soccer Association, Heather went on to become the first female CEO of Capital Football. Her leadership brought Canberra United into the national W-League and helped pave the way for the game to reach a wider audience.

Heather continues to mentor players, coaches and administrators, and her bursary program ensures that registration fees are not a barrier for women who want to play. Her vision has opened pathways for thousands of women to take part in the game they love.

💚 YOU HELPED SAVE CANBERRA UNITED 💚

Last season, the Canberra community came together in an incredible show of support - raising approximately $85,000 through the Save Canberra United campaign and securing an additional $250,000 in government funding.

Here’s where your support made a real impact:
✨ Two elite ice baths purchased to help players recover and perform at their best
✨ Player salaries covered for the final two months of the campaign

Without you, this team wouldn’t have been possible. Together, we didn’t just save Canberra United, we built the foundation for Canberra Women’s Football, a not-for-profit dedicated to ensuring women’s football thrives in our region.

⚽ Follow & support us as we continue building the future of women’s football in Canberra.

The Matildas' return to Canberra was a momentous occasion!

After three years away, they strode onto the pitch at GIO Stadium to face Argentina, marking an exciting step in their journey toward the AFC Women's Asian Cup.

For us fans, it was a thrilling chance to see them in action once again!

Beyond the game itself, the event was a powerful celebration of women's football, bringing our Green Family together in full force. The hope now is that this momentum translates into even greater support for Canberra United now and in the future!

The numbers don't lie, football and women are not getting equal funding no matter which way you slice the pie.

➡ SWIPE FOR MORE INSIGHTS

1️⃣ Comparing the ACT Government's funding for Canberra sports clubs reveals significant disparities. Cricket, through Andrew Barr’s proposed Big Bash League (BBL) team, is set to receive $3 million in establishment funding, while AFL, represented by a non-local team, receives substantial ongoing support. Meanwhile, Canberra United and the Canberra Capitals—key drivers of women's sport—receive considerably less. This raises questions about the fairness of funding, especially when local teams are underfunded.

2️⃣ When looking at funding per game, the GWS Giants, despite not being a local team, receive far more per game than any local team. Canberra United and the Canberra Capitals, receive much less. This stark imbalance needs to be addressed to ensure equity between Canberra’s male and female athletes.

3️⃣ The funding disparity for games played in Canberra is also clear. The GWS Giants receive more per game than local teams, while Canberra United and the Canberra Capitals, which represent the city in national women's leagues, receive minimal support in comparison.

4️⃣ Women’s teams, such as Canberra United and the Canberra Capitals, play the majority of all home games in the ACT, yet receive significantly less funding than men’s teams. While women’s teams in the ACT provide significant value to culture and tourism in the region through more games played in Canberra than men’s teams, their funding per game remains disproportionately low, reflecting a larger issue of inequity.

5️⃣ Finally, comparing national participation rates with ACT Government funding reveals a stark contrast: football/soccer has the highest participation rate in Australia but remains one of the least funded sports in the ACT. In contrast, sports like cricket and AFL, with lower participation rates, receive far more funding. This disparity underscores the need for urgent reform in funding distribution to better support football, which engages a large portion of the community but is significantly underfunded.
