My lavender plants are one of my favourite things in our garden. They never stop flowering, the bees love them and the subtle scent they surprise you with is uplifting and calming and from time to time, I just love pausing and putting my face in there to really breathe in their beauty. 🪻

5kg, the approximate weight of our head, is a lot to hold up every second of every day. So many structures are working behind the scenes non-stop to keep our head up in order to keep the eyes level. When we are in a balanced state/posture, the load gets distributed throughout the spine, so that we don't feel the heaviness. The moment we start to deviate from this position we put strain on the body. In the beginning it might not make a huge difference and will be fairly easy to correct with awareness and self-correction, but over time, the body develops a new way of being, which becomes harder to correct.
Think about how you sit at your desk, how you are on your phone/computer and even how you are when you are driving. Most likely, you are slouched. As the head shifts forward (remember, the eyes need to stay level), the spine needs to adjust. In order for the spine to adjust, the muscles need to adjust, but they start opposing each other more strongly than before - it's a battle of the strongest. The winning muscles end up holding the head forward resulting in a world of pain and dysfunction. Fatigue, headaches, neck pain, nerve compression, low back pain and shoulder dysfunction to name a few are all problems that can stem from having a forward head. Even our balance can be thrown as our centre of gravity changes.
Chronic forward head posture has to be addressed over a period of time, releasing the tight muscles and activating and strengthening the weak ones. The nervous system and brain also have to re-learn the "new" correct posture to let old habits die.
Remedial massage, corrective movement (somatics) & structural yoga are ways to help change and correct posture and improve function.
Remember..... FOR EVERY INCH FORWARD YOUR HEAD SITS, YOU ADD AND EXTRA 4-5KG OF WEIGHT THAT YOUR BODY NEEDS TO SUPPORT (every second of every day)

Lemongrass essential oil is my fav to diffuse in practice. I just love the refreshing and uplifting smell. It helps keep me focused, clears my mind and gives a sense of calm to the space without being too sleepy. I even put it in my massage balm to help my clients.

Stiffness can be a protective output from the nervous system, which potentially could lead to more tangible experiences of pain and compensatory patterns if not tended to.
And....Motion is lotion! Whether it's through conscious movement forms like yoga and somatics or through bodywork that targets the nervous system through various mobilisation and myofascial techniques, movement is key to healing and change.
I offer remedial bodywork and teach yoga and somatic movement classes in Cessnock.

Remedial treatments are available at Total Fitness, Cessnock. Diploma qualified & Health Fund approved. Booking link in Bio.
Somatic movement is ideal for everyone, but especially for those who want to move but are a bit limited. If being on the floor is a problem, I can modify movement exercises to suit you.
Yoga is open to anyone and follows a more traditional style, where there is a bit more flow sequenced into the class. The approach is on structural alignment and movement and does require you to get down and up off the floor. Again, I can modify your practice to suit.
Remedial treatments are for anyone with chronic/acute pain and dysfunction. My aim is to unlock what is causing the pain and dysfunction. My techniques suit everyone.

See stiffness as the first step towards chronic pain.
Step 1: Stiffness in an area of the body - ignored
Step 2: Annoying, but somewhat manageable, she'll be right type of pain - ignored
Step 3: Chronic, persistent pain that won't go away - ignored
Result: Headaches, poor or disturbed sleep, limited movement in affected area, nothing is able to relieve it, reliance on pain medication, your ability to function normally becomes reduced, postural dysfunction, movement pattern dysfunction, reduced capacity to do things, life is not fun etc, etc...
