Western Australia’s four judoka took on elite opposition at the 2026 World Championships in Baku, with Maria Swan and Keishin Ochi recording opening victories during a demanding international competition campaign.

37 years in the making, 4 months in the writing. I presented a research paper covering the story of the strategic planning and development of the UWA Judo Club - Perth WA. The Paper was presented at University of Tsukuba, International Judo Symposium, Kano’s Legacy and the Challenges of the 21st Century.

I was especially proud to carry a message of Friendship and Collaboration, from Professor Jennifer Howell, Deputy Vice Chancellor of UWA, and Head of UWA Global Engagement to the Symposium organisers and to University of Tsukuba. I was accompanied by Dr Martin Anderson of UWA Sports Science and my wife Karla.

This was an extraordinary event, bringing Judo academics and Judoka from around the World, to the sit of learning were the founder of Judo once sat. It was such an eye opening experience, that I enjoyed very much.

Thank you Michel Brousse and Rakwal Randeep for organising and running this super event and for inviting me to tell a story about Judo in the most Isolated city in the World, and what we did overcome many challenges.

The final few days of our 50th Year NARA & 45th Year of the Hyogo WA Sister Staye Relationship celebrations, covered a lot.

We visited the :

1) Universities National Unigames Judo event, where Yamasaki Sensei presented some medals.

2) Held a meeting to discuss a road path to creating future formal pathways of Judo exchange between WA and Hyogo.

3) Held a evening Dinner for further discussion.

4) Held a Legacy breakfast at the Wontil Hotel, where Yamasaki Sensei presented a Letter from the Hyogo Governor Saito San, to Hon Roger Cook, presented to Hon Katrina Stratton MLC, regarding 35 years of past UWA Judo exchange, and the future together.

A huge few days for WA Judo.

Stockley went straight to Japan after the Breakfast.

Starting this weekend 3 UWA judo club athletes representing Australia will be competing in the biggest competition of the year, the World Senior Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

We wish our trio of Maria, Keishin, Kohsei and the Australian national team all the best.

The Australian University Games took place today at UWA, Crawley campus. The competition brings together all the uni students from around Australia representing their university, competing against each other.

Congratulations to UWA judo club members and University of WA students, representing their respective universities.

Individual contest:
Oren Kelly (-57kg senior women - UWA) - 🥇
Timeo Tournier (-66kg senior men - RMIT ) - 🥇
Alex Vasilyev (-81kg senior men - UWA) - 🥇
Stephen Omondunbi (-90kg senior men representing Curtin Elite Judo Club ) - 🥇
Kris Ricther (-100kg senior men - Curtin University) - 🥇
Matthew Rintoul (-66kg senior men - UWA) - 5th place
Youhei Arya (-73kg senior men - UWA) - 7th place

Ryan Xu (-60kg - ECU), Jasper Cowell (-73kg - UWA) unplaced. Both gave it their best and performed well, but did not progress to the medal contest.

Day 2 of the Hyogo Prefecture Judo delegation’s visit to Perth.

After spending the morning walking along the Swan River and afternoon watching the Grand Final, our guests joined the UWA training session. A nice surprise, members of UTS Judo Club, here for the Uni Games, joined the training too.

Our guests performed Itsuno Kata and give instruction on Uchikomi and Uchimata.

Gifts were presented to our guests. Yamasaki Sensei expressed the thoughts on Jita Kyoei and the amazing history of exchange between UWA and Konandai, and his desire to deepen the Judo relationship between WA and Hyogo Prefecture.

A BBQ for all participants and UWA members and friends, saw all having to chance to meet and talk to our Hyogo guests.

We finished the day with a drink at the hotel bar.

The first day of our 50th Year NARA Agreement and 45th Year Celebration of the Hyogo Prefecture Western Australia Sister State Agreement, celebration.

This celebration focuses on UWA Judo Club’s relationship with Konan University and Hyogo Prefecture; honouring , Professor Yamasaki for his Friendship, support and mentoring over the past 35 years, which has contributed to the develop of UWA Judo Club, being the largest Judo Club in Australia in 2026, and the increase numbers of WA Judoka on International Podiums. @

This event co-incides with UWA Sport hosting the Australian University Games , which includes Judo.

This first day included a very positive detailed discussion on Judo at the Consulate-General of Japan in Perth . Professor Yamasaki, expressed how Judo is an International Friendship vehicle ; “ Jita Kyoei “ in action and his desire to expand and formalise Judo relations between Hyogo and WA.

Over the next few days, our International Engagement group ( including Hyogo delegates, reps for Judo Australia, JudoWA, UWA Judo Club and Konandai ) will discuss increased Judo engagement between Hyogo Prefecture and WA Judo with the aim for an MOU mapping out a future agreed after formal discussions, including a group of our next generation of WA Judoka participating passively in these discussion, as we build in the future of this relationship.

The event will close with a Legacy Breakfast at UWA, where a letter of support for formalising and deepening the Hyogo WA Judo exchanges, from the Governor of Hyogo Prefecture will be presented to a, representative of the Hon Roger Cook, Hon Katrina Stratton MLC. The heads of a number of UWA faculties are joining the celebrations, including :

We wish all our club members and UWA team members the best for the upcoming UniNationals Judo Championships this coming Sunday 27th September.

The athletes will battle it out with competitors from across Australia, and we'll be cheering them on.
