When someone has been hurt once, the world no longer feels neutral.
A rope on the floor is no longer just a rope.
It becomes a warning. A memory. A threat in disguise.
Thatโs what this proverb is pointing to:
โHe who has been bitten by a snake fears a rope.โ
Itโs not saying the person is weak.
Itโs saying the nervous system learns fast.
After a painful experience, the mind starts scanning for anything that resembles it:
a tone that sounds like the last argument,
a silence that feels like the last abandonment,
a small mistake that looks like the beginning of the same disaster
And even when the present is safeโฆ the body can still react like it isnโt.
This is why healing is not only about โmoving on.โ
Itโs about teaching the mind and body to separate now from then.
