Randwick Petersham Cricket Club The Randy Petes Dan Sams became our most recent Australian representative becoming the 95th T20 player.

The heart and soul of Randwick Petersham Cricket resides in the history of four separate
Sydney Grade clubs – Petersham, Randwick, Marrickville and Petersham‐Marrickville. The
collective lifespan of those founding clubs together with the 20 years of Randwick
Petersham to 2021 amounts to 263 playing years giving Randwick Petersham an undeniable
claim to be one of the oldest cricket clubs in the world. Randwick Petersham Cricket Club Est.2001
In 2001 the NSW Cricket Board proposed that Randwick and Petersham‐Marrickville be
omitted from the competition as part of a move to introduce a new club from Blacktown
while reducing the overall number of 1st Grade clubs. When
both clubs decided of their own volition to merge into a
separate entity to be known as Randwick Petersham Cricket Club
the Board dropped the plan. In the 20 years since, Randwick
Petersham has become one of the top clubs in Sydney Grade
Cricket winning the Belvidere Cup in 2019-20, 2 premierships in the 1st Grade Limited Overs and 3
Twenty20 competitions as well as in 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th
Grade three times, 5th Grade twice and once in the
developmental Metropolitan Cup competition. The prestigious
Club Championship was won in 2007‐08 and 2010‐11 while the
club has produced five first class cricketers with Simon Katich, Nathan Hauritz and Usman
Khawaja going on to play Test cricket. Former Randwick Test cricketer Mike Whitney has
been President of Randwick Petersham throughout its 20 year history.

Agents and Co Community Scoreboard

A disastrous day for the club going down to Western Suburbs in our four top grades with only 5th Grade and Metro Gold flying the flag with wins.

Resuming at 6-73 chasing 161 after the first day’s play, it was always going to be an ask to score the required 89 runs with just 4 wickets in hand. And that’s the way it turned out with wickets falling at 81, 90 and 92 before some rearguard action by Adam Leckey batting at no. 9, top scoring with 29 from 31 balls while hitting the only six of the innings. The 23 put on for the last wicket enabled the score to scrape past 100 to end at a record low115. The side’s previous lowest score against Western Suburbs was 123 in 2013-14. The loss means that the team has lost two of the first three rounds in the Belvidere Cup. That has only happened once in 26 seasons and not since 2005-06 when we lost all three. There was a second innings with Wests losing 2-1 before the match was called off at tea with the Magpies 4-150.

Our 2nd graders faced a herculean task in overhauling Wests’ record 4-391 declared. They managed 199 with five getting starts but no-one going on. Top scorer was Akther Hussain with a fighting 52 off 71 balls while Thomas Ley at no 10 was next best with 37* off 73. He and Toby Mackenzie who faced 73 balls in making 6, put on the best partnership of 41 for the 9th wicket. Rishabh Goyal with 25 off 87 balls at the top of the innings was next best.

In 3rds, Wests posted 5-212 declared off 59 overs. In the run chase, it was looking good at 4-124, but the loss of 3 quick wickets saw the score slump to 7-126. Opener Damian Sidney did best with 62 off 60 with 8 fours and 2 sixes. His 50 came off 45 balls. Next best was Toby McDonald at no 10, making 32 off 33. The last three wickets put on 69 finishing 17 short at 195.

Fourth Grade also had a decent size chase after Wests declared at 7-253. The side was in the hunt at 4-151 but lost their last 6 wickets for 24 to end at 175. Massimo Di Paolo belted 59 with 8 fours and a six while the consistent Jethro Sharman hit 32.

Wests batted first in 5th Grade but were rolled for 154 with Thanush Gowda taking 3-28 (10) and Lachlan Barrass 2-21 (9.4). Kaisei Doggett 32 in the final total of 9-155 to clinch a narrow victory and bring home the points.

Metro Gold also chalked up a win, chasing down Mt Pritchard Southern Districts’ 175 with 4-176. Aditya Parasa was unconquered on 71* while Josh Jones made 48. Metro Green play tomorrow and are 3-56 chasing Warringah’s 137.

VALE John Alvarez

It is my sad duty to report the passing of John Alvarez on Friday 23 October 2026. He died in Queensland just a fortnight after he moved there to enjoy his retirement.

John Alvarez was a bustling medium-pace lower grade bowler playing with Randwick in the 1970s. He was the chief organiser behind the Randwick Wanderers tour of the British Isles in June 1978 which included a young Michael Whitney. In one of the tours’ 17 matches, John lined up with the opposing Southampton team which was one short. It is now history that “Pedro” smashed the Randwick attack to the tune of 117! His scintillating innings remained a popular talking point at subsequent Wanderers reunions.

John became a sports memorabilia expert and created a business in that field. The team photographs displaying the club’s many premiership teams over the past 25 years were framed by John Alvarez. A most generous supporter, he regularly donated outstanding framed and boxed memorabilia items bringing in many thousands of dollars at many of the club’s functions, such as the annual President’s Luncheon. Accordingly, he was granted honorary membership of the Randwick Petersham Cricket Legend’s Society, remaining a member until his sad passing.

The family have advised that details of a tribute to John will be arranged and advised at a later date.

FW Building Randwick Petersham 1st Grade booked a place in its 7th Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup Grand Final with a win over Northern District in the semi-final at Coogee Oval today. Final scores were: Randwick Petersham 7-162 (20)-Northern District 133 (19.5). The Grand Final will be played against Bankstown at 2.30 pm next Sunday 25th October at a venue to be advised. It will also be the club’s 4th Grand Final in the past six years. The club won the competition five times before going down to Western Suburbs in last year’s Grand Final.

Skipper Riley Ayre called correctly at the toss today and batted in perfect Spring conditions. It was a rather slow start for openers Austin Waugh and Eknoor Singh with just 5 runs on the board after 2 overs. Waugh changed that in the 3rd and 4th overs belting 13 and 16 respectively with 3 sixes for a 0-36 scoreline. However, he was bowled first ball of the 6th over to be out for 39 off just 26 balls. The next 4 overs produced only 22 runs with Singh (9 off 15) and Jack Wood (7 off 9) back in the pavilion and a score of 3-69 from 10.2 overs.

Alexander Lee-Young joined Param Uppal and the pair put on 64 before an attempt at a single saw Lee-Young run-out for a dashing 41 off 19 with 5 fours and 2 sixes. At 4-133 off 16.3, runs were badly needed. Three sixes helped, and when the 20 overs were up, a competitive score of 7-162 had been posted although it was possibly 15-20 short of what was hoped. Uppal finished with 41 off 37.

In the run-chase, NDs had a brisk start with 26 coming from the first 3 overs. But in typical fashion, Daya Singh took the first wicket at 30. However, the real drama kicked in at 1-59 off 8.3 overs. In the space of 9 balls, NDs lost 4 wickets for 3 runs with both Param Uppal and left-arm pace man James Ward taking 2 wickets in their second over!

At 5-63 off 10 overs, the visitors needed 100 off 60 balls to win with 5 wickets in the bank. The boys were never going to let that happen and when Daya bowled the last two with the 3rd and 5th balls of the 20th over, it was off to the Grand Final we go!

James Ward finished with 3-15 (4); Daya 3-26 (3.5) and Param 2-22 (4). Athletic fielding saw Eknoor Singh and Adam Leckey each take 2 outfield catches while Angus McTaggart, Jack Wood and Ward also held great snares. Lee-Young again produced a sparkling stumping to dispose of the top scorer, Addison Sherriff for 37.

Agents and Co Community Scoreboard

Western Suburbs 1st Grade had the advantage at the end of play on the first day of the two-day encounter at Pratten Park today. Stumps scores were: Western Suburbs 161-Randwick Petersham 6-73.

Despite the rain during the week, Wests won the toss and batted. Angus McTaggart struck early for a 1-13 scoreline and when both Daya Singh and Austin Waugh chimed in with a wicket each, the hosts were struggling at 3-42. Worse was to follow when skipper James Psarakis was run out and McTaggart bagged a second scalp to have the score reading 5-72. The bowling pressure continued to bring results with Riley Ayre, Daya Singh and McTaggart adding to the wicket haul to have the Magpies reeling at 8-91 off 33 overs. But the tail dug in. Batters 8 and 10, Tom Brooks and Manraj Kahlon, batted for over 20 overs putting on 65 and taking the total to 156 before the innings was wrapped up for 161. Angus McTaggart ended with 4-58 (17) and Daya Singh, an amazing 2-6 from 7 overs.

In the run chase, runs were at a premium. New opener Ash Burton edged behind early for 1-6, but Austin Waugh and Eknoor Singh consolidated against a persistent and accurate attack. The 50 came up after 22 overs just as Eknoor edged to slip leg-spinner Tom Brooks’ first ball. And almost 6 overs and 9 runs later, Austin Waugh was bowled for 27 from a restrained and out-of-character 80 balls. Four balls later, Alex Lee-Young was on the way back to the pavilion and so was skipper Riley Ayre after three runs were added. Angus McTaggart faced 24 balls for his 6 but was bowled for a scoreline of 6-73. Five wickets had fallen for 20 including 4-9 between 53 and 62. Daya Singh held on with Param Uppal (7* off 30) for a stumps score of 6-73. The match resumes next Saturday with lots of work to do.

In 2nd Grade it was a day of leather chasing with Wests knocking up a mammoth 4 dec -391. In 22 games between the clubs, Wests previous highest score was 293 in 2012-13. There were two centuries while the 2nd wicket partnership totalled 317. At stumps, our boys had faced 4 overs to be 0-6.

In 4s, it was a similar story with Wests ending at 6-250 from their 80 overs, after being 4-108 off 39 overs. Both 3rd and 5th grades were washed out and will play a one-day match next Saturday.

In Metro Cup, RP Gold played today and had Mt Pritchard Southern Districts 7-163 off their 80 overs. Thanay Gowda took 2-39 (17). On Sunday Metro Green dismissed Warringah for 137 with the star being Oliver Lee with 4-26 and at stumps Green are 3-56 with the match in the balance.
