Coolamon Golf
Nineteen golfers, most of them still on a euphoric high from the previous day fronted sporting mild hangovers and a pair of bleary eyes for Sunday’s Stableford event.
And what a day! What an exquisite performance! What a brilliant way to complete an undefeated season with the most dominant ex*****on of the year. No Im not referring to Daniel R Milne’s golf round but the mighty Coolamon Grasshoppers.
I have witnessed more than fifty grand finals in the region and I can unhesitatingly state that the levels of defensive pressure exerted by this team was the very best of the best. Tackles crushed like the grip of a supersized starving anaconda and collisions were so brutal they made the Large Hadron Collider look like child’s play using ping pong balls and sponges in a fully carpeted room.
Congratulations to all involved, especially to the coaching group and the players who have bought so much joy to our community.
To the Golf. As indicated earlier Danny Milne had a day out, inspired by the previous day he drove the ball with all the ferocity of Bryson DeChambo upon hearing of LIV’s demise (and some of his waywardness) and his short game was as enchanting as the gentle chuckling of a contented child to hit the 40 point mark. Runner up was Declan Johnson, 37 points who has shown remarkable improvement under the watchful eyes of his grizzled old grandfather - Ray Jennings. Sandy Wilson 36 and Leanne hooper 35 used the round as an opportunity to polish their games to a sparkling silver in time for this Wednesday’s Ladies NSW Sand Green championship at Royal Coolamon. The ball rundown ended with Gav Stephenson 34 honing his talents for a dash at this year’s Club Championship starting on Saturday.
Novelty prizes were awarded to Sandy, Sandy, Danny, Cricket, Wayne Kew, Matt Lawson, and Gav while Jake Seymour holed the longest putt on the eighteenth. Gail O’Brien left with the raffle prize firmly ensconced in her back pocket but the Jackpot remained unclaimed and will now be worth over $150 for the first round of the club championship.
With two such important events upcoming the course is in brilliant fettle. The fairways are an emerald shade of green and the greens are running true. All is in readiness for the NSW Ladies’s Sand green Championship thanks to the sterling work of the volunteers, especially P***y Hilton and Stu and Jake Seymour. I’m sure all the ladies who experience our wonderful course and warm Coolamon hospitality will leave with the belief that they have played on one of the finest sand green courses on the state.
Finally, ring the bells and sound the trumpets loudly and clearly through every highway and byway, every nook and cranny, from the mighty mountain tops to the rivers and the far distant sea that Coolamon is the champion football town in the Riverina.

Coolamon Golf

It was a mixed bag of Golf last weekend. Fields were reduced as a consequence of football finals and the precipitation ruined Saturday’s event for most. A few hit off early and were able to complete their rounds largely unmolested by the rain. The main groups teed off just as the drizzle started, making it as annoying as a hyperactive blowfly buzzing around the ear in the dead of night. Aggravating but playable. Over nine holes the moisture grew steadily heavier precipitating most of the groups to pull the pin after nine holes looking as bedraggled and drenched as drowned rats. Ten minuted after these intrepid players started moistening the insides as well the rain magically disappeared. Alas too late.
For a couple of the lads who shall remain nameless it was an opportunity to blow out a few accumulated cobwebs. Drenched on the outside they reasoned, in the ying and yang of life, that they may as well be sodden the inside as well. Eight dedicated hours later they had well and truly reached their objective - as inebriated as a group of Irishmen left unattended in a well stocked brewery on St Patrick’s day. Great dedication lads.
Their were two groups who disdained such tomfoolery and headed out unto the elements to finish their rounds. Jackson Quinnell defied the dampness to register a fine 39 points streets ahead of Matt Hard on 33 with Ian Nottley claiming the pink ball, albeit in a severely reduced field.
With the milder weather on Sunday a slightly larger field contested the Stableford event.
Frankenstein McCaig had a tooth and nail battle right to the very last hole with The Grubster only getting the better of his ancient enemy on a countback with both finishing on 37 points. Geoff Wilson filled out the podium on 33.
Earwig Broadhurst, Grub’s offspring won his dad a father’s day present claiming the pink ball after he imploded on the second nine. No DNA test will ever be needed there.
Trev Jose took leave of his Census for the day and was rewarded with the raffle prize after a somewhat less than inspirational round.
Nearest the pin and Drive and Chip prizes went to Bruce, Ray, Ray, Grub, Stu and Stu.
This weekend Golf will take a definite back seat to the Football Grand Final. Coolamon is seeking a long awaited premiership after our best ever home and away season. The following poem was a used to help inspire the team to a mighty victory in 2000. Lets hope it works again.

The Magic of Football
“The pumping heart of country towns is their football team,
The games provide pressure valve, a chance to hope and dream.
The golden gifts it grants our youth can set them up for life,
An outlet for their youthful zest, and keeps them free from strife.
And crucial too for older folk, for their they can unwind,
And join the battle on the field (if only in the mind).
It grants a sense of unity, a belonging and a worth,
And epic victories make us feel like Emperors of the earth.
But finals are our special days and if a flag is won,
The memories last forever as our one day in the sun.
A premiership decider is a huge demanding test,
So summon the blood, fight like hell and play like men possessed.
And remember who you’re playing for as you burst onto the field,
Yourself, your coach, your teammates, so fight and never yield.
And also as you face the foe for glory and renown,
You’re playing too for Coolamon, our nest our home our town.”
It’s been far too long. It’s time for a Coolamon premiership. Go you mighty Greenmen.
