As a surfer improves, is it okay to still have poor or no swimming skills?
As a surfer starts to surf in the deeper waters, catching bigger, unbroken waves moving out of the shallow areas so they cannot stand being further away from the shoreline, it is crucial that they are a competent swimmer in the surf. This is a critical safety aspect – SWIMMING ABILITY IS A MUST.
The bigger the waves, the stronger the swell, the greater the currents, then the greater the competence, ability and swimming strength a surfer needs.
It is important if someone wants to continue surfing, they must work on their surfing skills but also their swimming skills &competence, surf awareness, understanding of the ocean & surf, and understanding of the environment to ensure they maximise their ongoing safety in the water.
The most common reason why someone loses their board in the water is a legrope breaking.
If this happens, a surfer must be able to swim to shore. If they don’t have the skills, ability or swimming strength&fitness to do this, it can pose a grave risk to their life. Often there are other surfers around who will offer to assist but this cannot be relied on and surfers need to ensure they have the level of skills & competence to match the conditions they are surfing in. This includes their surfing skills but also their safety&swimming skills. It also means that surfers must be realistic with their understanding & judgement of their level of surfing & abilities & not go out in conditions that are beyond them.
While when you are learning and doing your first lessons with a professional surf school, you do not need to be able to swim strongly or even be able to swim at all. However if you continue with your surfing, then this is a skill that is critical for your safety and well being

Do I need to be a strong swimmer, or even be able to swim, to learn to surf?
Another very common question that we get asked is whether someone needs to be a strong swimmer to be able to surf. Quite often, when people are interested & keen to try surfing & are wanting to book a lesson so they can feel the excitement & fun of riding waves, a big issue holding them back is their lack of swimming ability or fear of not being able to swim well enough to do it, possibly not being able to swim at all.
The great news for these people is that the answer is NO.
Or it should be no, if they are getting lessons at a professional, experienced surf school with qualified instructors.
We teach our Learn to Surf Lessons in very shallow water. Generally our instructors are in water no deeper than waist deep. All our surfers can stand & touch the ground so if they fall off their board, all they need to do is to put their feet on the sand & stand up.
Our comprehensive lesson plans & stringent safety protocols have been set up & are in place to ensure that everyone who does lessons with us feels this safety and security during the entirety of the lesson. We believe that surfing & being in the ocean is such a powerful thing & provides so many benefits to everyone, we want to provide this opportunity to everyone so they can experience the beauty, the thrills & excitement of being in the ocean, surfing waves.
What is important though is that people are comfortable in the water.

Surf within your Ability
As a surfer, you must always surf within your ability. No matter whether a novice or experienced advanced surfer, all surfers also must understand their limit.
Surfers must choose locations, breaks and conditions that suit their ability level &match their competence &physical conditioning.
Variables that surfers should take into consideration when they are looking at a location before surfing include
• Realistic personal surfing ability
• Physical condition
• Wave size
• Type of wave
• Wave power
• Crowd & number of surfers
• Currents
• Entry & exit points into & out of the surf
• Your equipment
The best way to learn what is suitable for you is to talk with your instructor about it during or after your lessons so that you know where is good for you to go to continue practicing &what conditions are suitable for you.
Ensuring that you are practicing in the appropriate location with appropriate conditions suitable for your ability will ensure that you continue to progress your surfing skills as well as your surfing confidence, surfing knowledge &understanding of the sport. It will allow you to correctly practice the techniques you have learnt in lessons. Remember Perfect Practice Makes Perfect.
If you practice in an unsuitable location, with inappropriate waves, with too many surfers, using equipment that is not suitable or anything else that’s not appropriate for you can potentially hinder your progress and improvement but also it can be a safety concern to yourself and other surfers.

Be SunSmart – protect your skin using natural products and support a local Coast product and young entrepreneur!
Being in the elements, under the hard Australia sun, we all need high quality, high performing sun protection. Being outside, being in the ocean and surfing day in day out, we are always on the look out for great stuff that keeps us protected. We were stoked when we came across Indo Coco
We think that the background on this brand is super cool & thought we would share it.
We are always really excited to see people being inventive, backing themselves, trying new things and showing true entrepreneurial leadership. We are especially excited when this is with locals and even more so when they are the younger generations. This is very much so with INDO COCO (.coco)
Meet Kiki & the story behind ‘Indo Coco’.
Kiki at the age of 12 was finding it hard to go surfing without burning her skin with the chemicals used in sunscreens.
So although only 12 years old, she researched how to be sun-safe in the surf without burning or irritating her skin. “I soon discovered that there were so many chemicals in so many products, being the main cause of the irritation to my skin. So after having trouble finding natural sunblocks I decide to try make my own, with natural ingredients, safe for the environment , non-polluting, something that looked & felt good, effective when used.”
