This Sunday the Coutts Crossing Croquet Club are holding their next FREE come and try day on Sunday 20th of September between 9am and 12pm. We welcome you to come along and join in to discover that croquet is not a snooze-fest and that it is actually a strategic and tactical game as well as exciting and good for you.

Croquet is suitable for all age groups and all physical abilities and we welcome anyone who would like to come along and have a go.

⛔️🛑 LAWN 1 CLOSED 🛑⛔️

Levelling of lawn 1 has commenced this afternoon at the club. This undertaking means Lawn 1 is closed for the duration of the Levelling process. We thank everyone for their patience over the coming months whilst these improvements are undertaken 🙏 Lawn 1 will be back better than ever once this is completed.

A huge thank you to this motley crew for their efforts on Saturday to complete the scarifying of lawn 2. Collectively across 2 weekends this bunch have volunteered over 50 hours of time to attend to the lawns to ensure they stay in peak condition so everyone can continue to play.

Eleven of us headed south early this morning to participate in the Sawtell Friendly. We joined many great players from Woolgoolga, Port Macquarie, South West Rocks, Sawtell and Orbost and Bairnsdale in Victoria. Sawtell put on a smashing event with Wendy Forbes managing the lawns and Jamie Mair taking charge of the catering. We were spoilt for choice with many morning and afternoon treats ♡

30 seconds with Simon
Here Simon demonstrates how he undertakes a stop-shot. It's very simple and quite straightforward, there's definitely no fussing around. We all took some time during training to hone our skills practising this one. No matter how simple or complicated the croquet shots are, they all need practising regularly.

Over the weekend a number of us volunteered our time to scarify (de-thatch) the croquet lawn. A process which uses sharp metal blades or teeth to cut deep into the soil to remove dead grass, moss and built up organic waste. Why did we do this? To increase air flow and oxygen, to enable water to reach the roots rather than sitting on top of the grass and most importantly to open up space for fresh grass roots to spread which will make our lawns thick and green.

We didn't quite get the job complete as we unfortunately had a mower malfunction. We're hoping this is fixed early next week so we can finish up and get our members back out and using this lawn.

A BIG thanks to our volunteers who gave up there Saturday afternoon. Royce, for operating the heavy machinery. Simon & Ade, for emptying grass catchers and swapping our blades and cutters on the mower. Tom, for bringing the barrows and emptying them as they filled up. Sasha for capturing the event and sharing with you along with managing the grass with the boys and finally to Marilyn W who spent many hours spring cleaning the club house and kitchen 👏👏👏👏👏

We capitalisd on Wednesday's downpour at training today, with our first drill focusing on lawn speeds and how the ball travels differently through squelchy vs dry patches.

Next was In/off shots, with Coach Simon taking us on a journey all about angles and how imaginary balls are vital to the game of croquet. Simon taught us manoeuvres that can get you out of sticky situations and give your opponents the heebie-jeebies...

Friday's free training sessions are becoming very popular at the club, with Twelve curious members coming along to join in today! In true Coutts Crossing style the sun shone brightly and we once again had a really great day 😀

Today at the club was all about the Singles Club Championship. With Peter Deeth and Simon Cook stepping up for the challenge.

Both players bought their A game with some very fine croquet played on the lawn. The format was best of three with two games going to the 13th hoop. Peter took the win for game one and Simon bought home the championship winning the 2nd and 3rd games and retaining the club championship title for another year.

Keith Brodie was kind enough to donate his time today and wear the referees cap. We were fortunate enough to have quite a few spectators come along to watch these two great players in action. We've put together a few highlights for you to watch and enjoy.
