The Swords Club Welcome to The Swords Club! The club was formed in 1913, and is the oldest continually operating fencing club in Australia.

It operates from the gymnasium at North Sydney Girls High School in Crows Nest. The club's membership has included many State and Australian champions, and has been the centre for State and National training squads, competitions and camps. Under Head Coach Vivienne Tucker, who is supported by five other qualified coaches, we welcome fencers of all abilities from beginners to advanced. The Club offers beginners classes for all ages, individual coaching in foil and epee, as well as social fencing. Please feel free to contact us if you would like any further information on our club or details of lessons and classes. We look forward to welcoming you to The Swords Club.

Vale – Valdemar Charles “Nandy” Sucic

26 April 1933 – 22 July 2026

It is with considerable sadness that The Swords Club recently received the news of the passing of Valdemar Charles “Nandy” Sucic on Wednesday 22 July 2026. Nandy, as he was affectionately known, considered the sport of fencing as one of his greatest passions in life. He commenced fencing in 1945. Upon arriving in Sydney from Croatia in 1959, he quickly went in search of a fencing club and discovered The Swords Club, where he was warmly welcomed. He was a dedicated member of The Swords Club for over 40 years. His impact on fencing in Australia was considerable. Long after he had fenced competitively, he devoted his time to coaching, volunteering, friendly bouts with juniors or attending events simply to encourage other fencers. He was generous with his expertise, wisdom, humour and time. Nandy was much-loved, and a friend to many. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

The Sucic Family is hosting a Celebration of Life in honour of Nandy on Saturday 17 October 2026, 2:00-5:00pm.

It is with deep sadness that The Swords Club acknowledge the passing of Edwin Lapitan. Our thoughts and sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

Edwin was an integral part of The Swords Club, volunteering his expertise, time and resources in the operation of the club, and for the wider fencing community throughout Australia. He imbued a life of service for the good of others.

His good humour, wise words, sound advice and gentle nature were deeply appreciated by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

TSC – We’re back for 2026

Happy New Year for 2026

We’re back for social fencing and individual lessons from Saturday 17 January 2026 and Tuesday 13 January 2026.
Note: The club will open from 3:00pm on Saturdays 17 and 24 January 2026 and will go back to the usual 10.00am to 5.00pm from Saturday 31 January 2026.

Contact your coach to see when they are starting lessons for 2026.

74th Nils Saksen Mixed Handicap Foil – Saturday, 13 December 2025

Club members of all ages and standards are invited to compete in the annual Nils Saksen Mixed Handicap Foil. Fencing will be electric with score handicaps against the more competent fencers. Prizes awarded to the top 6 finalists. All competitors must have their own equipment.

Schedule

Arrival – 8:30am for 9:00am roll call
President’s address – 9:15am – 9:30am
Start of competition – 9:30am
Lunch – During the lunch period, a free sausage sizzle with drink will be provided for all
entrants. Other food items will also be available throughout the day.
Parking will be available in the school through the gates to the left of the loading bay
Entry fee – $25 (2025 membership fees paid)
