Last night, I met with Claire and Belinda from Oxley United Football Club and Centenary Stormers FC about the Football Queensland proposed fee increases.

While we are pleased that they have paused the increase, now is the time for them to meaningfully consult with our incredible grassroots clubs- to ensure they get a genuine say in the future of the game.

We know families are doing it tough and it's never been more important to keep sport affordable for our local community soccer clubs.

⚡CLUBS STATEMENT – 2027 COMPETITION ACCESS FEE ⚡

Queensland football clubs welcome Football Queensland’s decision to pause the proposed 2027 Competition Access Fee (CAF) model. The pause creates an essential opportunity for further consultation before changes affecting clubs, volunteers, players and families proceed.

Over the past week, clubs across Queensland have delivered one clear message: a change of this significance cannot proceed without genuine consultation with the clubs responsible for implementing it. Before the most significant change to player registration and fee collection in many years is introduced, clubs’ concerns must be heard and addressed.

More than 140 clubs have stood together to deliver that message. Our position has been clear and consistent: the proposed CAF model risks increasing costs for players and families while shifting greater financial risk, administration and workload onto the volunteers who are the backbone of community football.

We thank FQ for listening to the collective voice of clubs and pausing the rollout. This is an important first step. Clubs are ready to engage constructively and in good faith, provided the consultation is genuine, transparent and able to shape the final outcome.

Consultation must extend beyond a small group because the consequences of these reforms will be felt statewide. Clubs from every part of Queensland should have a meaningful opportunity to participate and be heard, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the clubs and communities that sustain our game.

We call on Football Queensland to commit to a genuine statewide consultation process before any revised CAF model is finalised or implemented. The process must be open and accessible to every affiliated club, across every region of Queensland, giving all affected clubs the opportunity to understand the proposal, provide feedback and help shape the outcome.

Our clubs are united in seeking a model that protects affordability for players and families, supports rather than burdens volunteers, and is practical, transparent and sustainable for community football.

To everyone across Queensland’s football community who signed the petition and stood shoulder to shoulder with clubs: thank you. Your incredible support and solidarity helped ensure our collective voices were heard, and we are deeply grateful.

We look forward to working directly with FQ to resolve these issues and ensure the voice of Queensland’s clubs remains central to the way forward.

United clubs. A strong voice. A better outcome for football across Queensland.

A little context to go with previous statement to help everyone understand why clubs are so worried about the changes.

You probably saw on the news that fees will be increasing this year, we are never a fan of raising fees, especially this big of a jump, but it's not just higher fees that is the problem, it's how they are being structured.

~ The club now has a much higher financial risk when entering teams, so we might have to consider getting rid of payment plans and demanding all fees up front.

~ Having to pay earlier means we have to reconsider our off-season costs, field and club maintenance or buying new equipment so we have enough cash reserves

~ The new fee structure incentivises larger teams, which means less game time per player

This means more work for our already overloaded volunteers as we try to understand how to manage these changes.

All of the clubs are coming together to try to get Football Queensland to understand our concerns and work with us.

Most clubs are too scared to risk publicly speaking out about our problems with Football Queensland because their normal reaction is to threaten to ban any individual or club meaning all the work we have put into building up our community would be lost.

Together, our clubs are stronger. Together, our voices must be heard.

Request Football Australia to investigate registration fee increase!

Football is more than just a game. It is a vital thread in our community’s fabric, fostering friendship, teamwork, discipline, and a host of other important life skills. For years, families from all walks of life have benefitted from accessible and reasonably priced registration fees, allowing young players to pursue their passion on the field. However, the proposed fee increase is concerning as it poses a significant financial burden on many families who already struggle with the cost of living.

According to recent data, participation costs are one of the primary barriers for parents enrolling their children in sporting activities. Substantial increases, such as those proposed, will likely lead to decreased participation rates, thereby depriving our youth of the opportunity to engage in physical activities that promote health and wellbeing. Furthermore, these hikes contradict Football Queensland's mission to promote the sport and make it accessible to everyone, regardless of economic status.

We urge Football Australia to take immediate action and initiate an investigation into the reasons behind the substantial fee hike. It's essential to ensure that decisions impacting community football are transparent, fair, and justifiable. A comprehensive review could bring clarity and assist in identifying potential alternatives that could offset the increased costs, thereby keeping the sport accessible and nurturing the dreams of thousands of young footballers.

Let's protect the future of our game and ensure that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have the chance to play and enjoy football. Sign this petition to demand an investigation by Football Australia into Football Queensland’s proposed registration fee increases for 2027. Help us keep football accessible for all.
