Turns out all those fishing trips add up to more than a full camera roll 🎣🔥

Taking out the WRFL League Champion title meant I scored this absolute ripper of an Iksplor Adventure BBQ as the end-of-year prize… simply through my everyday fishing, getting amongst it and uploading my catches along the way.

And I can tell you now, this thing is doing the rounds!

We put it to work at SWB Barra Challenge and it’s such an easy bit of gear to throw in. Quick to set up, quick to pack away and those adjustable legs are seriously handy when your “kitchen bench” is whatever bit of Territory ground you can find 😂

A huge thank you to Iksplor Adventure BBQ for backing the prize and to the Women’s Recreational Fishing League for creating opportunities like ladies around Australia.

And here’s the bit I reckon more women need to know...You can do this too.

You don’t need to be fishing elite tournaments every weekend. Join WRFL, grab your competitor pass, go fishing, upload your catches and get yourself on the leaderboard.

When the fish aren't biting, the cubby houses start appearing! 😂🎣

Fishing with young kids can be a bit of a challenge, especially when the fish aren't playing the game and boredom starts creeping in.

Over the years, I've learnt to always have a few bits and bobs on the boat to keep the kids entertained.

And without fail, it usually starts with building a cubby house!

A few clips, a sheet and whatever else they can get their hands on, and suddenly the boat has been transformed into their very own little hideaway.

I've had some pretty wild cubby houses built on my boat over the years. No two have ever been the same, and I love seeing what they come up with.

The thing is, not every fishing trip needs to be about catching fish.

Sometimes the kids are more interested in building their masterpiece than watching a rod tip, and that's perfectly fine by me.

They're still out on the water, using their imagination and enjoying the day.

And if that means I've got a floating cubby house for half the trip, so be it! 😂

This photo looks pretty peaceful and innocent. What it doesn’t show is that this was Kylie’s first day out on the boat, just her and me, mid-week, with no one else on the water.

Which meant launching and retrieving was all on me.

Being able to do that doesn’t just happen. For me, it started with the thought that maybe I could do it myself. Then watching. Asking questions. Paying attention at the ramp. Having a go. And probably the hardest bit, getting over the fear that someone might see me get it wrong.

Boat ramps have a funny way of making you feel like every eye is on you, even when nobody really cares. It can be enough to stop you trying.

But capability comes from doing. Sometimes slowly. Sometimes with an extra go to straighten up. Sometimes while quietly hoping nobody is watching.

Then one day, it is just you and a mate, there is no one else to take over, and you realise you can make the whole day happen yourself.

That little moment matters. Not because you have to do everything alone, but because you know you can.

Kylie got her first day out on the boat. I got a pretty good reminder of what a few awkward first attempts can eventually become.

If there is something around fishing you have been waiting to feel ready for, watch, ask, have a crack. The confidence usually comes after.

Seeing women launch a boat, ask questions, miss fish and keep going matters. It makes the first go feel less massive.

That is why I share the ordinary and ugly bits too, not just the shiny ones.

Sometimes the interesting part of fishing isn’t what you catch. It’s what you get to watch.

We spent a solid six hours on the water and had the Live running for much of it.

The longer we stayed, the more interesting the Saratoga behaviour became. Fish moving in and out of the same area. Periods where the screen came alive, followed by much quieter patches. And one thing we kept coming back to was the wind.

As the wind conditions changed, so did what we were seeing from the fish.

Was the wind actually influencing their behaviour? We can’t say that from one day on the water, but there was certainly a pattern there worth paying attention to.
Then there was the bigger question... Were we watching spawning behaviour?

The timing fits. Northern Saratoga generally spawn around September to early November, leading into the Wet, and these fish are normally considered fairly solitary and territorial.

So seeing this level of activity and multiple fish using the same area at this time of year definitely got us thinking.

Would I call it confirmed spawning? No.

Possible courtship or pre-spawning behaviour? Absolutely worth considering.

And this is probably my favourite part of fishing like this. Six hours gives you time to actually watch what the fish are doing.

Every trip gives us another little piece of the puzzle.

Eighteen toga by midday, double hook-ups were the theme, and apparently my role for the day was professional one-handed fish netter.

It was hectic... top notch, but hectic. By the end of it each of us were properly cooked.

Funny how much you can handle when there is another fish on, another cast to make, and no time to overthink any of it. Just get amongst it. 😅

If a post helps one person get out there or back themselves a bit more, that is enough for me.

The Corroboree Park Challenge (CPC) is underway, officially opened by the Honourable Gerard Maley, Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, on behalf of the Honourable Lia Finocchiaro, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

Pictured alongside him is Emma Harvey, one of the lead event coordinators of CPC, Andrew Mackay MLA, Member for Goyder and Darryl Smart, President of the Palmerston Game Fishing Club.
