Wow, this bird flu has certainly brought out the nut jobs.
I’ve already had to delete several comments and ban a few people from the page.
At this rate, I’m going to start calling myself “Bird Flu” because I’ll be taking a few birds out of the population myself this season.
Goose season is here, the birds are around, and we’re going to enjoy the great NT lifestyle.

Numbers of Magpie Geese are up
Some encouraging news for Top End hunters.
The latest 2026 NT Government aerial survey estimates around 1.69 million Magpie Geese across the Top End — approximately 27% higher than 2025, with nesting activity up around 71%.
Great signs for the population and another reason why hunting management should continue to be based on actual surveys, population data and science.

The waterfowl hunting season is now open!
The season will run from Saturday 5 September 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, with access to designated reserves on specific dates:
📍 Lambells Lagoon Conservation Reserve and Howard Springs Hunting Reserve from 5 September to 23 December 2026.
📍 Shoal Bay Coastal Reserve and Harrison Dam Conservation Reserve from Saturday 5 September 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027.

• October from 6am-7pm
• November from 5:50am-7:15pm
• December from 5:50am-7:30pm

’Twas the night before goose season, and all through the Top End,
Not a honk could be heard, not a whilster was whilsting
The swamps were dead quiet beneath the night sky,
Not a magpie goose stirring, not one flying by.
The buffalo wandered through speargrass and mud,
While crocs watched the billabongs from banks in the flood.
The four-wheel-drives were loaded with decoys and rum,
For tomorrow at daylight, the goose season has come.
Hector is building, the sweat season is here,
By eight in the morning, you’ll be sweating I fear.
The alarm’s set for four and there’s one sleep to go,
Then out to the floodplains before first light starts to show.
So sleep while you can, because tomorrow we’re loose—
Opening morning is coming…

ONE DAY OUT – ONE MORE SLEEP
I haven’t seen much action overhead around the northern suburbs lately, but this morning was a good sign.
About five magpie geese flew slow and low straight over the top of my house. I know people out rural have been seeing birds moving around for quite some time, but personally I really haven’t seen many over the northern suburbs yet.
But here we go, shooters. The wait is almost over.
One more sleep until the 2026–27 magpie goose season kicks off.

Over the years, while waiting out in the swamp before first light, I’ve always found myself looking up at the sky.
There’s something pretty special about that time of the morning. Sitting there in the darkness, waiting for the sun to rise in the east, with the anticipation of the day ahead and the hum of magpie geese out across the swamp.
On a clear Northern Territory morning, the night sky can be absolutely spectacular. At around 4:30am this time of year, there are even a few planets you can pick out while you’re sitting there waiting for first light.
Anyway, here’s a little bit of information about what you might be looking at next time you’re sitting quietly in the swamp and looking up at that clear Territory sky.
A quick reminder about being croc wise.
I don’t want to be one of those people telling seasoned Territorians, especially waterfowl hunters, about crocodiles. Most hunters up here are very croc wise and don’t need to be reminded.
But I thought this photo was worth sharing.
I was out doing some scouting recently and checked a spot that I hunted early last season. There are no birds there this year, but when I rolled up early in the morning, there were two crocodiles sitting almost exactly where I had been hunting last year.
Last season there was a lot more tall grass and reeds around this spot, so you wouldn’t necessarily have had the same visibility. This year the grass has died right back and the area looks completely different.
It’s a good reminder of how quickly things can change in the Territory. A spot you hunted safely last season might look completely different this season, and crocodiles can move into areas where you may not have seen them before.
It’s definitely worth scouting your old hunting spots again before the season, not only to see where the birds and water are, but also to have a good look around for crocodiles and anything else that has changed.
Stay croc wise, keep your eyes open and never assume an old hunting spot is exactly how you left it.
