Nestor Enjoying Best Of Both Worlds With Dual Role (Gunnedah Monday)

Kody Nestor has been a jockey then a trainer then back to a jockey and now he’s both as he looks to once again move back into the training ranks.

Earlier this year the 36-year-old quietly took out a dual license, enabling him to both ride and train, and has already produced a couple of winners from limited runners.

He’ll partner the latest of those winners when he rides Lady Lilibet in the Pursehouse Rural Gunnedah Plate (2150m) on Monday.

Weight issues saw Nestor give up riding in 2017 but he returned to the caper four years later after training 107 winners.

“I had a few clients who had some horses and they didn’t know what to do with them so I pushed for a dual license,’’ Nestor said.

“I only have a handful of horses in work at the moment, it’s only a hobby, but I’ll transition back to full time training toward the end of the year.

“You work bloody hard having to do both jobs but it’s very rewarding. While I’m fit and healthy and my weight is okay I’ll pursue riding.”

Nestor’s first runner as a dual license holder was back in April, he rode Territory Style in a maiden at Wellington and a couple of weeks later he partnered the same horse to victory at Narromine.

He rode Lady Lilibet in her first run for him but Jake Pracey-Holmes did the steering in her two subsequent starts including her win at Dubbo last weekend.

The mare was handed to Nestor by John Ramsey hoping to place her better in the central districts and so far that’s proven to be a good move.

“He was finding her a little hard to place over in the Hunter, she goes okay but she’s limited,’’ he said.

“She can stay a bit and we knocked over a maiden the other day.

“It’s been hard finding the right races, I had to keep her fresh for the mile the other day and back her up into this race.

“I gave her a bit of work the other morning and she came through it in good order.”

Whether Nestor’s next foray into full time training will be a permanent one remains to be seen, he says he loves the life of a jockey. When he’s fit.

But when you put the work in to preparation a horse for a race and delivers a win he said it’s a little bit special.

“When the body is good and the weight is good there’s no better job. When it’s not that good it’s a tough job,’’ he said.

“It’s a different feeling when you ride one that you train. You put a lot of time into it – any trainer will tell you that – and to have that experience of riding and training it gives you more satisfaction I suppose.

“Don’t get me wrong, when you get beaten on them you’ve got no-one else to blame.”

KODY NESTOR RACING BACK IN THE WINNERS STALL!

It hasn’t taken Kody long to get going in the west as TERRITORY STYLE put them away at Narromine. Luck was taken out of the equation and with a superior finish they were off the mark.

Congratulations Mr T M Palmer, Mr J R Lyons

🟪🔷▫️TALBRAGAR WINS◽️🔷🟪
TALBRAGAR has been a work in progress as we continued to high quality work out in by Luke Morgan and the Morgan Thoroughbreds team.

The son of Snitzel out of Golden Slipper winner Overreach has plenty of tricks but with an aggressive ride by Jake Pracey-Holmes he broke through at Narromine. Corumbene Stud have been patient and we couldn’t be more pleased to get the job done on debut.

GRANDELLIE (Rubick x Sessanteisimo) is shining bright at Dubbo and continues to turn plenty of heads with her grace and elegance.

The daughter of Rubick recently won her maiden on the home surface and will look to continue her progress through the grades during the spring.

It's another story built on patience and belief in the horse that was bred and now raced in these highly recognisable colours in the west.

WE CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT FRIDAY
It's that time of year when the premier country cups are contested and the $200,000 Port Macquarie Cup will be our focus on Friday.

🟪FAST TALKING has been one of the poster boys of Kody Nestor Racing and the Country Classic winner will look to add this highly sort after Cup to the trophy cabinet. The son of Walking Or Dancing has been in great form filling the minors in the Black Nugget, Dubbo Cup and Bathurst Cup and the 2000m feature will be right up his alley. Since making the move to Dubbo he has only finished outside the Top 5 twice in 21 starts which includes 4 wins, 5 seconds and 4 thirds which highlights his consistency and will to win.

⬜️With the Kosciuszko hype still simmering away JAILBREAK will head east in hope of taking out the $80,000 Birdon Group Sprint that has attracted the likes of Gr2 Sapphire Stakes placed Wandabaa and Gr2 Lightfingers runner up Never Talk. Our speedster was gallant with the 62kg impost in the Dubbo Flying to finish 3rd and his on pace pattern can only benefit him around the tight turning Port Macquaire circuit. This horse deserves a career highlight like this after finishing 3rd in the $150,000 WRA Country Championships Qualifier and 3rd in the $200,000 Wagga Town Plate.

🟦DEMOCRACY MANIFEST is one of our exciting prospects going through the grades and the $50,000 Country Magic will give us a very good guide on just how well he is. Allam Racing are big supporters of the stable and he was dominant first up on Dubbo Cup Day in a high quality group of maidens. The Flying Artie 3YO gelding contested the 2020 Wellington Boot as a 2YO and has the experience of racing on days that draw so much hype and anticipation.

We can't wait.
