What a great weekend it was at the Mackay & Sarina Clay Target Club for their annual 2 Day Carnival!! 🔥

Thanks so much for having us and putting together such a fantastic event! It was amazing to spend time with such great company and we can’t wait to come back for the next one 😊

Also, a big congratulations to all the winners! Everyone did an excellent job and should be very proud!!

Clay Target 101

How do the targets get in the air? 🥏

So, we know what a clay target is… but how does it actually get into the air? 🤔

Clay target clubs use specialised target-throwing machines, commonly called traps, to launch the targets used across the different events.

Depending on the event, targets can be launched from different locations and travel in different directions, angles and flight paths. Some head away, some travel across the field, and some can take a very different path altogether.

It’s all part of what makes the different events challenging, and why you’ll often hear the word “trap” around a clay target club.

There are also different types of traps used for different events, but we’ll get to those as we work our way through the series!

So now we know what the targets are and how they get into the air…

Next up, we might have to start making sense of some of those event names you see on our monthly programs 👀

Today one of our members attended a coaching clinic with two of Australia’s best 🏅

What a great chance to pick up some new tips and techniques, fine-tune a few things and bring some fresh knowledge home to Dysart!

We love seeing our members getting out there, learning and continuing to improve. There’s always something new to learn in this sport, no matter how long you’ve been involved.

A huge thank you to James Willett and Mitch Iles for sharing their knowledge and experience, and to everyone involved in bringing an opportunity like this to our region! QCTA Central Zone

Clay Target 101

What actually is a clay target? 🟠

Fun fact: there’s actually no clay in a modern “clay” target! 😮

Despite the name, clay targets are generally made from finely ground limestone mixed with a binding material, which is then moulded into that familiar saucer-like shape.

And that shape isn’t just for looks!

A target needs to be strong enough to handle being stored, transported and launched at speed, while still being brittle enough to break when hit. The shape, ridges and curves all help give it the strength and flight characteristics it needs.

And why are they usually bright orange?

Simple, visibility! 👀

The bright colour makes them easier to pick up against the sky and different backgrounds, although targets actually come in a range of colours and styles depending on the event and conditions.

So, despite what the name suggests, that little “clay” flying through the air is actually a pretty cleverly designed piece of sporting equipment!

And now that we know what they are...

SEPTEMBER MONTHLY 🔥

September is coming up, which means it’s almost time for another monthly!

Just a reminder that we’re changing things up a little this month. We’ll be getting together on Sunday 13th September, NOT our usual first Sunday, the 6th. Make sure you pop the right date in the calendar

After such a massive couple of months for the club, we’re looking forward to getting everyone back together for another good day of friendly competition, plenty of laughs and hopefully a bit less chaos behind the scenes 😂
