Mersey Yacht Club

Mersey Yacht Club Yacht Club Johnson in 1970. His investigations revealed that the first regatta held at Sayer's Point, where the original Club House stood, was in 1877.

Although authentic records covering the early period are hard to come by, extensive research into yachting on the Mersey was done by the late Mr George D. It was not certain whether a club-house was actually built at that time, but it is certain regattas and other yachting events were held then. A Yacht or Aquatic Club was inaugurated in September, 1893. Mr William Buck was elected to the chair of foundation Commodore in that year. The inaugural meeting of the Mersey Yacht Club, as we know it today, was held at Curwen's Salon in Rooke Street, Devonport on 12th November 1923

Learn to Sail
Mersey Yacht Club has diversified the options for children and adults who want to learn to sail.
With our club predominantly sailing keel boats and trailer sailers, anyone who wishes to learn can come down to the club any Saturday we are sailing, and there will be a skipper willing to take you on board one of the club operated keel boats and trailer sailers. Private owners are just as willing. So don’t hesitate if you’re keen.
For younger sailors we will still conduct a two day clinic in our sailing dinghies during the summer school holidays.
In a new initiative, we have partnered with Tamar Yacht Club at Beauty Point to offer a structured program using accredited Australian Sailing coaches.
The first term runs from October 17th until December 12th, then there will be a second term during February to April.
Launceston young sailors travel up to Beauty Point for these training sessions. We plan to drive from Devonport, leaving at 8am each Saturday (except long weekend) arriving at 9am for a 9.30am start. Training runs until 11.30am. All safety gear and boats are provided. First sessions are free, then Tamar YC junior membership of $120 will be required, which covers tuition and equipment use for the entire sailing season.
If there is sufficient interest from Devonport youth who wish to commit to this course, our club sponsor Mersey Advantage Pharmacy will make a 12 seat mini bus available. Parents will be asked to assist at times, and will need a WWVP card and parental permission if more than their own children are present. A fuel contribution will be required if the bus option is utilised. Parents feel free to drive your own children if you prefer. We can help co-ordinate participation.
For those who wish to get an initial head start learning to sail, this is a great opportunity to quickly gain basic skills, which will make it easier for transition to our bigger boats.
For further details, or for any questions, please contact our Vice Commodore Terry Travers on 0408 188 683.

It's Spring at the Club. Can you tell?
Opening Day is this coming Saturday, 10th October. Boats are being repaired and readied. Activity is increasing. The Club and grounds have been cleaned and prepped at the recent working bee - thanks everyone who pitched in.
Our cute "squatter" family have moved in again this year - and they don't clean up after themselves - if you haven't noticed.
And today, the Dragon Ladies launched two of their big boats - great to see so many "pink" members on the water. Bring on the 26-27 season. (Calendar attached)

Thank You Volunteers!
The pride in their club was evident on the faces of the large number of members who turned up Saturday morning to tackle the 'to-do' list before sailing starts again next month. Gardens tended, Masrm's repaired, flotsam cleared from the ramps, rubbish removed to the tip, and the downstairs rooms given new life.
What's really obvious, is that those who turned up enjoy each others company, worked hard for the common good, and had fun together😁.
As well as the many members, including our valued Dragon Ladies, all of the successful candidates at the recent committee elections, and the three second year members were present - thanks for your ongoing management, service and commitment, team.
As promised, Leanne was in the kitchen preparing a light lunch for the "labourers'. Her food is worth working for. We all have learned, that for Leanne, a light lunch means everyone going home "filled to the gills". Delicious. Thank you all.
If you want to join in with this happy group, many of them gather on a Friday evening upstairs at the Club from about 6pm. See you next Friday maybe???

Thanks to Wayne who did the lawns during the week. Let's do our bit now to make the rest of the facility, and our infrastructure, just as neat. Thanks

Here's the promised whale video. Thanks Luke for the raw footage and Adam for the edit.

Saturday - A Whale of Day
Glorious weather. A group of mates just have to go out on the yachts. Can't waste the day. Finish up entertained by frolicking whales. Enough said! How good is this? Then back to the Club to chat about it all. Thanks Angela and Luke for the pics. (Trying to get a video to work. Stay tuned)

Labour and Lunch.
Our next Club activity will be held on Saturday, 19th September, commencing at 9am.
We'll be conducting a working bee in preparation for the upcoming sailing season.
A list of tasks will be published at the end of next week so you can bring any tools that might be useful.
After we've done the work, a light lunch will be served - we can 'munch and mingle' to share stories. (Yes, some of us can spin a yarn or three.)
Let's pitch in and get the Club ready together.

Inspiring Ladies
Friday night showcased the Loaded Spuds delights prepared by our Social Committee ladies, led by Leanne. We are very appreciative of their efforts, and the comments heard on the night, plus posted later on Facebook, confirm how delicious the spuds were – if you missed the night, you missed out.
Equally uplifting was the movie ‘Maiden’, telling a tale of tenacity, and the fight against entrenched masculinity in ocean racing in the 80s just to be able start a race.
Tracey Edwards gathered an all-female crew, mortgaged her house to buy an older, heavier, racing yacht, and showed that with years of hard, preparatory work, and skilful, courageous sailing, the women were not only equal, but could beat the men, winning two of the southern ocean legs of the 89-90 Whitbread Around The World Race, coming second overall. (See ice bergs in the screen shots.)
Their achievement changed ocean racing for women.
Our members and friends who attended were spell bound, and there were some moist male eyes observed.
Thanks Jamieson for the movie, and Connie and Lindie working with Leanne in the kitchen.
Another successful social night. Look out for more to come next month.
(Fun fact: After the yacht ‘Maiden’ was discovered derelict in 2016, she was refitted, served as a roving ambassador for young women’s education, then was skippered by Heather Thomas, leading another all-female crew, to IRC handicap victory in the 23-24 Ocean Globe Race. Go girls. Google ‘Maiden’ if you want to be inspired even more.)

Plenty Happening
It may be the Club’s winter break, but you wouldn’t know from today’s weather.
Bright sunshine highlighted Wayne Cole’s constant attention to our lawns, which caught the approving eye of our local Federal Member for Braddon, Anne Urquhart, MP.👀
Anne is a great supporter of our redevelopment plans, so when she was seeking a peaceful location to stop for a conference call to Canberra – where else would she pick? 🤔
Good choice Anne – our vision is for a community facility with a lovely outlook – to share.
Speaking of community, our Club provides our boat ramp for contractors, and our car park is used each day so the BridgePro workforce, who are busy finalising the Spirit terminal, have somewhere to leave their cars.
Trucks aren’t left out either!
Our slipway has been active ; Rhani went back in during one lovely evening recently. Force 6 came out today. With all the old salts turning up to help, our yard at times becomes a kind of a “marine men’s shed”.
And Adam Williams has been out “training”, again, improving for next season. He sent in a snap of a spinnaker run down the river. Better see that coloured sail up more often, now, Adam.
We’ll be back into full activity in October, so get in touch if you’d like to try sailing (on a nice day 🌞).

Loaded Spuds and Maiden Movie Reminder
This Friday @ 6.00pm, Leanne and the ladies are preparing for the spuds. Please book before Tuesday night - only $15.00 - so they can get their ingredients sorted (see flyer attached).
Movie starts at 6.30pm, and is FREE.
You don't need to buy food to attend. Just come and watch if you prefer.
It's an inspiring sailing story that changed offshore racing.
Hope to see you at the Club on Friday night. 😀
