ST IVES CUP A HUGE SUCCESS
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNING TEAM
Mick Simms, Rob Johnson, Dave Florance, Jonathon Jermalinski
The 27th St Ives Cup was hugely successful again this year with a full house of 42 teams competing from both metro and country areas. The “Bowls weather Gods” were very kind this year, assisting in plenty of great bowls being played. Thanks to all the players for supporting the event again.
The event attracted a very even field again this year with some new teams which is always great to see. The State and Over 60s Women competed with 6 teams between them with the state rink, skippered by Deb Saunders, coming fourth. There were many state men’s bowlers also competing as this event offered valuable match play practice for the upcoming national bowls championship. It also included country teams and women bowlers who demonstrated they could mix it with the men.
For the first time 4 teams were undefeated with 5 wins each. 1 team won 4.5 games and 7 teams won 4 games. All 42 teams received some prize money as $40 was paid for each win or $20 each for a draw. A recent introduction is the “lucky loser’ prize for each round of $20. The first 8 place getters received major prize money. No team lost all games with the worst result 1 draw for 3 teams only.
The ever popular “Spider,” known as the “Happy Hairy Harold Spider”, named in memory of the late Harold Christenesen, was a great success. $300 to the winner to start the day. $200 for 2nd place.
The “MEGABOWL”, sponsored by Wembley Settlements, was extremely popular again. Results showed how even the teams were overall this year with the winning score being only 15 out of a possible 20 points. Congratulations to the winning team skippered by Ross Bresland. $400 to the winner and $100 to the runners up team.
There was plenty of great food, a sit-down lunch on Sunday with a very successful auction and a great raffle with over 50 prizes. Frank Tyson’s “Guess the value of the coins jar” competition was full of fun and excitement. Thanks to Frank. Thanks to all the players for supporting these important events.
It was very special to have Libby Bridge from St Ives attend again this year, being the 27th year of sponsorship of the event by St Ives Realty.
Cambridge Bowling Club members are to be commended on the smooth running of this event. Particular thanks go to the club manager, Ross Bolton for his organisational skills and hard work. The ladies, led by Mary Anne Hart, as always produced a great lunch and thanks to them all. A special thanks to the hard-working bar staff led by Bev. John Knowles, our results operator, and his helper in Mark James did a fantastic job processing results. Special thanks to Joan Bolton for her great array of raffle prizes. Thanks to anyone else who assisted that I may have missed.
Thanks to all players and those who participated in any way to make this such a successful event.
Great weather! Great food! Great fellowship! Great Bowls!
