The Body Talk Therapist Yoga is meant for everyone and every body. In order to make this a reality it has been her dream to open a Yoga Clinic!

At The Body Talk Therapist, we believe the body is more than just a vessel – it’s a storyteller, carrying the echoes of past experiences and emotions, while also holding profound wisdom. True healing begins by listening closely to the subtle language of your body, interpreting its signals, and guiding you on a journey of deep transformation and self-discovery. Through a holistic approach that integrates evidence-based somatic and cognitive therapies, we honour the full depth and complexity of your being, bridging the connection between mind and body. Founded by Martine, a passionate psychotherapist and yogi and advocate for holistic trauma recovery and Ian a tech savvy, meditation and yoga lover. The Body Talk Therapist was born out of a deeply personal desire to understand and treat trauma in a way that delivers lasting results.

You remind a room full of people to breathe. You hold the pause, notice who is struggling in the back row, and keep the space steady for everyone in it.

And then you go home and can’t find any of that for yourself.

This is common in our work and rarely talked about. When we spend our days holding space for people carrying a lot, some of it stays with us. It can show up as tiredness that rest doesn’t touch, poor sleep, or a practice that used to feel alive and now feels like effort.

I’ve been a psychotherapist for more than 30 years and a yoga teacher alongside that. I know this toll from my own experience, and from watching colleagues I care about.

Over two days online, we’ll explore:

Caring for yourself while you care for others

The beliefs and roles we carry as carers, personally and professionally

How vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue build, and the early warning signs

Finding balance and re-resourcing yourself

Yoga practice for embodiment, and the use of sound

Trauma-informed self care rituals you can make your own

The Use of Self, Vicarious Trauma & Compassion Fatigue

Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, 9:30am to 5pm AWST, online via Zoom
20 hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education through a registered provider (YACEP)

Taking in some of other people’s pain is not a sign you’re doing the job badly. It’s a known cost of doing it with care.
Some of the work comes home with you. On the drive. At dinner. At 3am.
I’ve spent more than 30 years as a psychotherapist, much of it in the public mental health system. I’ve felt this cost myself, and I’ve watched it wear down colleagues who were very good at what they did.

If you work as a clinician, nurse, doctor, teacher, first responder or human service worker, you meet people in distress most days. Over time it can show up as poor sleep, brain fog, less patience at home, or losing the joy that brought you into the work. Burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma each play a part, and each needs a different response.

Over two days online, we’ll cover:

The impact of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue

Warning signs of trauma exposure responses

The role of transference and countertransference in mental health work

The beliefs and roles we bring to caring, personally and professionally

Psychological insight work

Practical, body-based ways to ground and re-resource yourself

You don’t need any yoga experience to attend.

For anyone working in a trauma-impacted role, conscious that some renewed self energy is needed.

Burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma often get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t, and knowing which one you’re in changes what helps.

Burnout comes from the conditions of the work. Workload, systems, too little support.

Compassion fatigue is the gradual wearing down of your capacity to care. It’s the cost of caring deeply for people in pain, over a long time.

Vicarious trauma goes further. Repeated exposure to other people’s trauma starts to shift how you see the world. How safe it feels, how much you trust, what you expect of people.

You can be in one without the others, and self care that eases one can miss the rest entirely.

In October I’m teaching a two-day online training on exactly this. It’s a small group, and we’ll look at the use of self in the work, what trauma stewardship asks of us, and how to build self care that holds up rather than becoming one more thing on the list.

The Use of Self, Vicarious Trauma & Compassion Fatigue

What if your pain isn’t the enemy, but a protector? In Internal Family Systems, pain often sits in front of parts, the frightened part, the driven part, the inner critic, the part that quietly keeps us from being looked after.

In IFS research with rheumatoid arthritis, many people carried “caretaking parts” that had never learned to care for themselves and when they finally increased their own self-care, their symptoms eased.

The invitation isn’t to fight the pain, but to get curious about what it’s protecting. Curiosity, not force, is where healing begins. Working gently with these protectors is part of my Yoga Psychology & the Neuroscience of Pain training - 20 hours, live online; details in bio.

The whole human walks into your room.

Pain, stress, trauma, self- awareness, we were trained to treat them in separate boxes, but the nervous system never got the memo. You can’t treat the mind and leave the body waiting outside. More and more of us are arriving at the same conclusion: to help people heal, we have to join the dots.

Yoga Psychology & the Neuroscience of Pain & Stress is a 20-hour live training that bridges eastern and western psychology, giving you evidence-based, trauma-sensitive tools to bring the body and nervous system into your clinical work with anxiety, depression, chronic pain and stress-related conditions.

We don’t just practice yoga as a toolbox of strategies for hard moments.

We practice so that balance becomes your body holds on its own, becomes hard wired.
Below thought, beneath effort. So that when life is challenging, your nervous system already knows how to respond adaptively.

That’s not a technique you reach for, or a behaviour you learn to adopt.

That’s the real work, not managing yourself, but feeling at home within yourself.

You hold space all day. But what holds you?

Your practice was never only the yoga shapes, but also meeting your own parts, on and off the mat, so what you carry stays yours.

The work begins with you.

The person on your mat is never just their body.

Someone comes in for tight hips and leaves having brushed up against grief.

A student’s breath won’t settle and it turns out neither will their week.

We can’t separate the shape from the mind, the mind from pain, or pain from the slow work of becoming who we are.

It’s all one thread now. And our students feel the difference when we can hold the whole human, not just the shape.

That’s what this training is for. Yoga Psychology & the Neuroscience of Pain & Stress - a 20-hour live course blending traditional yoga psychology with modern neuroscience, so you can teach with more depth, safety and confidence.
