Geelong Touch Football Association

Geelong Touch Football Association Geelong Touch Football Association is a family-friendly mixed competition. We play all year round. Our members are aged between 6 and over 70.

To contact us send us a message or email [email protected] Geelong Touch Football Association started at King Lloyd Reserve in 1996 as a non-profit Association. Our purpose is to provide all members of the community with an opportunity to stay active and healthy, playing a team sport in a social environment. Our club/sport promotes inclusivity; it is a mixed family non-contact sport that allows anyone to play regardless of gender, age, experience, background or ability. Currently we have over 300 registered participants and over 30 teams. One of the amazing benefits of our sport is that friends, family or colleagues can form a team and play our non-contact, social sport together at any age. Mondays are the competitive A and B grade competitions, Wednesday the family grade comp that is suitable for parents and kids and Friday is our Junior program. All night start at 6.15 and can run till past 8pm. We run in both summer and winter.

πŸ‰ TOUCH FOOTBALL POSITIONS

In Touch Football, 6 players take the field for each team, with up to 8 substitutes in the interchange area, creating a maximum squad of 14 players.

πŸ’ͺ MIDDLES

Middles occupy the two central positions and have a high work rate. They play an important role in controlling the game and understanding attacking and defensive structures. Middles are commonly referred to as 3s.

⚑ Attack: Middles set the foundations for strike players by isolating and manipulating defenders. Strong rollball skills provide a platform to launch attacks, while being able to pass both ways and throw a long ball are valuable skills.

πŸ›‘οΈ Defence: Middles take on a large defensive workload as much of the attack comes through the middle. They need excellent fitness and agility while helping maintain the shape and tempo of the defensive line. Strong communication is key for a middle, helping organise teammates around them.

πŸ”— LINKS

Links play between the middles and wingers. They need to be athletic, agile, quick off the mark and strong decision-makers. Links are commonly referred to as 2s.

⚑ Attack: Links create scoring opportunities through passing, agility and well-timed attacking lines. Good hands are important when attacking at speed near the try line.

πŸ›‘οΈ Defence: Links help relieve pressure on the middles by making touches in the middle-to-link zone. Making touches with the correct hand can help protect their corner and allow the winger to better cover the long ball.

πŸƒ WINGERS

Wingers occupy the outside positions closest to each sideline. Speed, finishing skills and a strong defensive read are important. Wingers are commonly referred to as 1s.

⚑ Attack: A winger's main job is to convert try-scoring opportunities. Holding depth and width, safe hands, good footwork and being able to put the ball down with either hand are valuable skills.

πŸ›‘οΈ Defence: Wingers may need to cover both the opposition link and winger, particularly on the safe side. Reading attacking plays and communicating with the link beside them is key.

πŸ‰ Knowing the basics of Touch Football

Touch Football is played on a 70m Γ— 50m field, with 6 players from each team on the field at a time.

The aim is simple: score a try by grounding the ball on or over the try line within the in-goal area. The sidelines and dead-ball lines are out of bounds.

Play begins at the halfway line, with the defending team starting 10 metres back. The attacking team then has 6 touches to move up the field and try to score, with passes travelling backwards or sideways.

After a touch, defenders must retreat 7 metres before becoming involved in the next play.

πŸ‰ THE ROLLBALL & DUMMY HALF

When a touch is made, the player in possession performs a rollball by placing the ball on the ground and stepping over it.

A teammate then picks up the ball and becomes the dummy half. The dummy half can run or pass, but cannot score a try. If the dummy half is touched while in possession, the other team gains possession, so moving the ball on quickly is often the best option!

πŸ” CHANGE OF POSSESSION

Possession changes after the 6th touch, or when an error or penalty infringement occurs, such as dropping the ball or making a forward pass.

For infringements that result in a penalty, the infringing team must retreat 10 metres from the point of infringement.

πŸ“ THE 7M ZONE

When a defender enters the 7m zone, the defending team must continue moving forward at a reasonable pace until a touch is imminent or made.

Once the attacking player with the ball enters the 7m zone, defenders are no longer required to continue moving forward. However, they cannot retreat backwards until a touch is imminent or made.

πŸ”„ INTERCHANGE AREA

Players can substitute on and off throughout the game through their team’s interchange area.

🟨 SIN BIN AREAS

Players may be sent to the sin bin for a period of time following certain infringements or misconduct.

Repeated infringements around the 7m line can also result in a player being temporarily removed from the field through an exclusion.

We recommend having at least 10 players in your team to allow for substitutes and player absences.

Please contact us if you are looking for additional players or would like help finding a team.

Competition rules

Players must be at least nine years old.
Teams must have three males and three females on the field at one time.
Boys aged 9–13 and men aged over 60 may play in a female position and will be identified by wearing an armband.
A team may ask one male and one female player to fill in when it has no other substitutes available.
All fill-in players must be approved by the opposition captain before the match begins.
If the opposition captain believes a particular fill-in would create an unfair advantage, they may ask the team to find another player.

We also have a Geelong Touch Fill-In Group on Facebook, where teams can request available fill-in players:
