Wise words from the team Coastal Equine Vet https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1MRQD5rcBq/

It's that time of year, again! As we await to see which path Cyclone Narelle is going to take it's time to start preparing, as we are sure to get some wild weather either way.

Cyclone Preparations:
Have a cyclone plan that includes your WHOLE family (pets and horses too!).
Ensure your horse is up to date on Tetanus vaccinations.
Gather important identifying paperwork (registration papers, microchip numbers, brands and recent photographs with identifying marks) and store them in a waterproof, safe, easily accessible place.
Have recent photos of you with the horse, to prove ownership.
If you are on a property with poor fence-lines which may fail add easy identification to your horse:
Braid a luggage tag or laminated identification strip to your horse’s main and tail hair (not too close to the tailbone) or spray paint, or use clippers to put your phone number on your horse.
Clear any loose debris around your property including in your sheds/stables/aisles, to prevent risk of flying objects.
If your property could be subject to flooding, DO NOT confine your horse. It is better to turn it out and allow it the ability to move to higher ground if needed.
Have a decent supply of hay AND WATER stored (up to 2 weeks worth) in the highest and driest place possible, covered to protect from water damage.
Assess power lines on your property and where they may fall into paddocks, move horses from these paddocks.
Have an emergency tool kit ready- including saw, hammer, nails, fencing supplies etc.
Have torches and batteries ready to go.
Have an emergency first aid kit ready (for humans and pets) including thermometer, bandaging, ointments (savlon, betadine, flamazine), bandage scissors, duct tape.

**IF you need to refill your horse first aid kit, please contact us ASAP and get that organised soon. It's a good idea to have pain relief, eye ointment (Chlorsig is fine), wound ointments and bandaging on hand as roads may be closed, and phones may be down if we are near the Cyclone's path.
