Coaches help shape athletes...
But who helps our coaches? 🤔

The Western Australian Institute of Sport will be joining MWAS and the Mid West Sports Federation for a FREE Mid West Region Coaches Forum - bringing together coaches and people working in sport from across our region.

It’s a chance to learn from the WAIS team, share ideas, ask questions and connect with others who play an important role in helping Mid West athletes develop and thrive.

The forum is open to local coaches, sports teachers, CITS and City of Greater Geraldton staff, sporting organisations and others involved in supporting athletes in the Mid West.

What a way to finish the local show season for Stevie Hopkins, who had an awesome day at the Northampton Show! 🐴👏

Stevie cleaned up across both the showjumping and hack rings at her final show before heading off to Nationals, coming away with some brilliant results:
🏆 1st – 60cm Pony Club Showjumping
🥈 2nd – 80cm Pony Club Showjumping
🏆 Champion Off the Track Horse – including a beautiful rug and flower garland
🏆 Champion Rider – 16 Years & Under
🏆 Most Points Overall Junior Rider – 16 Years & Under Ring Events for 2026

A fantastic day and an even better way to wrap up the local show season.

Congratulations, Stevie! Next stop, Nationals - we can’t wait to see you represent the Mid West! 💙

From the Mid West to the biggest stage in footy! 🏆

Wishing MWAS alumnus Judd McVee the very best of luck as he takes to the field in the AFL Grand Final tomorrow.

It’s pretty special to see one of our former athletes competing at the highest level and it doesn’t get much bigger than Grand Final day at the MCG!

The entire Mid West will be cheering you on, Judd. Enjoy every moment and give it everything! 💙

Good luck, Judd! 👏

Ready for the biggest stage of all 🏟️

E.O.I close MONDAY!

We're searching for the next wave of talented young Track & Field athletes from across the Mid West and we'd love to see you put your hand up.

Our Track & Field Talent Identification Day is happening at Active West Stadium on Saturday 19 September, with athletes aged 12–18 invited to express their interest.

We're looking across the full range of track and field disciplines:
🏃 Sprints & hurdles
🏃‍♀️ Middle & long distance
💨 Jumps
💪 Throws
🔥 And now, pole vault!

This isn't just about finding the fastest runner or biggest jumper on the day. We're looking for young athletes with potential, determination, discipline and a willingness to work hard.

For some of our current MWAS athletes, a Talent ID day was the beginning of something much bigger – leading to specialised training, selection in the MWAS high-performance squad and success at state and national level.

So if you're aged 12–18 and wondering how far your ability could take you, this is your chance to find out.

📅 Saturday 19 September
📍 Active West Stadium
⏰ Morning – time TBA
❗ EOIs close 5pm Monday 14 September.

Register your interest:

Parents, coaches and clubs - please tag or share this with a young athlete who should be there - they've got the weekend to get their forms in! 🙌

Three of our Mid West Academy of Sport athletes took to the track at last weekend’s Mullewa Gift, with some fantastic performances across the day.

At just 14, Amelia Heinrich powered away from the field to claim 🥇 1st place in the 120m Novice, with fellow MWAS athlete Rowan Dennis holding strong to take 🥉 3rd place.

Amelia then stepped well outside her comfort zone in the gruelling 550m, lining up against competitors 10 or more years her senior. She showed incredible determination and endurance to fight all the way to the line, narrowly missing the podium in 4th place.

Wynand Neethling, 19, also produced an impressive day on the track. Starting from the back mark, Wynand worked his way through the field to qualify for the 120m Mullewa Gift Final, where he finished a very close 4th.

He wasn't done yet! In the final race of the day, Wynand delivered another brilliant run to claim 🥈 2nd place in the 120m Back Markers Invitational.

A win, two more podium finishes and some seriously impressive racing from our MWAS crew! 👏

Congratulations Amelia, Rowan and Wynand - a fantastic day of racing and a great representation of MWAS and the Mid West!

Alongside premiership captain Tiani Teakle, fellow MWAS alum Jasmine Johansen was also part of East Fremantle’s WAFLW Grand Final side, helping the Sharks claim the 2026 premiership! 🦈

To have not one, but two MWAS alumni out there on Grand Final day - and ultimately celebrating with the premiership cup - is a pretty special moment for our Academy and the Mid West sporting community.

Jasmine’s journey is another wonderful example of where dedication, hard work and opportunities in sport can lead our young regional athletes.

A huge congratulations to Jasmine on this fantastic achievement. We’re incredibly proud to see you continuing to make your mark! 👏💙

Two MWAS alumni. One premiership team. One very proud Academy! 🏆
