🏸 Vale Ken Turner 🏸
It is with great sadness that the Tasmanian badminton community farewells one of the true giants of our sport, Ken Turner.
Not only was Ken one of Tasmania’s greatest badminton players, but he was also one of Australia’s most respected ambassadors for the game. A gentleman both on and off the court, Ken was known for his humble nature, quiet wisdom, and willingness to share his knowledge with teammates, competitors, and generations of young players who followed in his footsteps. The impact of his mentorship and guidance continues to be felt across our badminton community today.
Ken’s achievements are unlikely to ever be matched. He represented Tasmania on ten occasions, captaining the state seven times and leading Tasmania to National Interstate Team Championship victories in 1962 and 1964. He claimed multiple Australian Championships, including Australian Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles, represented Australia internationally, became the first Tasmanian to captain an Australian badminton team, and in 1966 captained and managed the Australian badminton team at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica. His remarkable career also included eight Tasmanian Men’s Singles titles, nine Men’s Doubles titles, and nine Mixed Doubles titles.
In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to badminton, Ken was made a Life Member of the Tasmanian Badminton Association in 1985 and was inducted into the Tasmanian Sporting Hall of Fame in 1987.
Badminton Tasmania extends its sincere condolences to Joan Turner and the entire Turner family during this difficult time. We thank Ken for everything he gave to our sport, our state, and our badminton family.
Rest in peace, Ken. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. ❤️🏸
