Today’s lecture on Adaptive / ID Judo coaching with Kashiwazaki Katsuhiko — a true legend of our sport — was a powerful reminder that good judo is simply good coaching.
Clear rules. Simple language. Consistent structure.
Safety, balance, and confidence before force.
Adaptive judo isn’t about lowering standards — it’s about raising the quality of coaching so everyone can belong on the mat.
Grateful for the opportunity to learn from one of the great minds in judo and to take these lessons back into my own coaching practice.
Judo really is for everyone. 🥋

Huge thanks to for having me down tonight 🙏
Loved running a no-gi judo & takedowns session for the BJJ crew — focusing on practical entries, balance breaking, and standing transitions that actually carry over to rolls and competition.
Awesome energy on the mats, heaps of good questions, and a room full of people keen to learn. Appreciate the hospitality and the trust — hope the techniques add another layer to your game 👊🥋

I am deeply honoured to be appointed Head of the Australian Delegation for the upcoming Adaptive Judo Study Camp in Japan, delivered through Judo Australia.

This three-day study camp in Tokyo brings together international coaches, athletes, and leaders committed to the principle of Judo for All, with a strong focus on adaptive, inclusive, and disability-informed practice. It is an important opportunity to learn directly from global leaders in this space and ensure Australia continues to develop safe, meaningful, and accessible judo pathways.

This appointment strongly aligns with the work we are doing at Maishin Judo Club and through the Veterans Grappling Foundation, where inclusion, accessibility, and the use of judo as a tool for wellbeing, rehabilitation, and connection sit at the core of everything we do. The insights gained from this program will directly inform how we continue to support veterans, people with disability, and diverse community members across our programs.

I’m proud to represent Australia in this leadership role and look forward to bringing back practical knowledge that strengthens adaptive judo delivery nationally.
Thank you to Judo Australia and the organisers for the trust and opportunity.

As Head Coach of Maishin Judo Club — last week was genuinely one of the most special weeks on our tatami.

We had one of the biggest international turnouts we’ve ever had — Olympians and elite athletes from multiple nations all sharing the mat together, pushing each other and elevating the standard.

A special thank you to Rok Draksic and the Finnish National Team 🇫🇮 for spending the entire week training with us.
As a coach, watching your systems up close was invaluable. Your focus on structured kumikata, your ability to move from grip exchanges directly into Ne-Waza scoring sequences — it was world class.
And then to see those exact details convert into results at the Gold Coast Oceania Open… that says everything.

What stood out as well was the openness — nothing held back — pure judo, pure sharing of knowledge.

Our athletes got better.
Our coaches got better.
Our club got better.

This is what judo is really about.

Thank you all — safe travels and all the best for the next stage of your Olympic qualification journey. 🇦🇺🤝🌍

After such a huge week of competition, tonight’s session was a quieter one — but still really special. We were lucky to welcome two visitors from New Caledonia 🇳🇨.

Big thanks to Gerald for bringing along one of his students from TôKON Judo Club. Always a pleasure to share the mats with friends from around the world! 🌍🥋

National Champion 🇦🇺🥇 | Veterans U90kg
What a special day to take out the title — on the 60th birthday of the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, the unit I proudly deployed with to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Even more meaningful was having my long-time coach Mike Shields in the crowd, cheering me on. Mike’s not just a mentor — he’s a Vietnam Veteran who served with the 2nd Battalion, and has dedicated decades to guiding athletes like myself on and off the mat.

Grateful, humbled, and proud. OSS 🥋

Catching up with old friends and new at

It was awesome to see the 's first full-time athlete, Obian, leading the way. It's so satisfying to see the ADF finally taking a step in the right direction — supporting promising young combat sports athletes with the opportunity to train and compete full-time while building a career.

Back training in Melbourne after so many years away, it felt like coming home. Great to see familiar faces like Omar, Glenn, and Nick still on the mats, mixing it up with the next generation. Truly inspiring to see the passion for Judo continuing to thrive!

Surprise visit for one of my favourite humans!
It was an absolute pleasure to make a surprise appearance at Resilience Training Centre and see Mizuho running a fundamentals class, helping her students prepare for their upcoming grading.
Watching her teach with such passion and care was a real highlight — it’s a reminder of why people like Mizuho make the Judo community (and the world) a better place.
Keep smiling and inspiring, Mizuho! Proud of you!

What an incredible experience hosting for a seminar at .judo.club !

It was fantastic to spend some time with you while you’re "down under" on holidays with your family. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing your coaching philosophies and learning how you approach playing judo—it’s always inspiring to gain insight from one of the best.

The feedback from our students and the visitors from other clubs has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone was blown away by your teaching style, technical expertise, and the energy you brought to the mats.

Thank you again, Tommy, for sharing your knowledge and passion with us. We hope to see you back here sometime in the future! Safe travels and enjoy the rest of your Aussie adventure!

What an honour to take home the Major John Whipp AM CSM Perpetual Shield this year! 🏆 It was a fun, action-packed event, and I had the privilege of fighting LTCOL McCarthy for the shield. Thank you Sir 🫡🪖🎖

The team event saw current serving ADF members square off against a combined veterans team representing 🇦🇺 🇸🇪 🇷🇺 🇬🇧 🇧🇷. The level of judo displayed by all competitors was top-notch! I'm very thankful for being a part of such a great group of lads.

We’re already looking ahead to next year and would love to see even more teams enter. If you're part of a military judo team or a veteran who wants to be involved, please reach out—we’d love to have you on the mats!
