Reactive strength is a trainable entity. As part of rehabilitation/ performance optimisation I talk with athletes about ‘the 3 legged stool’ whereby the legs need to be figuratively balanced in that the running kinetic chain needs to be able to: 1. Produce peak force requirements (Fmax), 2. Repeatedly produce force (endurance), 3. Quickly absorb/release energy (reactive strength).

Plyometric training is an effective means of training reactive strength. Physiologically plyo training increases muscle stiffness & reduces tendon hysteresis (energy dissipation).

Even small short duration workouts distributed through an athlete’s training week can yield positive & favourable adaptations such as: improved running performance & running economy (Eihara et al 2022).

Obtaining objective measures/data around reactive strength capabilities for an athlete can make the training process more meaningful & enjoyable.

Collecting data here with 2023 World Champion performing a countermovement jump (CMJ) with Force Decks. Key data can be gathered on force production, temporal factors, jump height, & asymmetries.

If you can get access to some testing I highly recommend getting some data & programming to improve your reactive strength properties 🚀

[MTSS vs TIBIAL BONE STRESS INJURY IN RUNNERS]

Injuries to the tibia are one of the most common running related injuries.

It is important to differentiate between MTSS (medial tibial stress syndrome or ‘shin splints’ as it is often colloquially referred to) and tibial bone stress injuries.

Tibial bones stress injuries (BSI) must be diagnosed early to avoid progression along the bone stress injury continuum of which a frank stress fracture may be the end point if the injury remains undiagnosed. Alternately the ‘sports medicine world’ used to think that if a runner had MTSS and continued to run it would progress to be a frank bone stress injury. However we now know this to not necessarily be true. A runner may have MTSS and continue running & NOT progress to a frank BSI.

There are numerous clinical signs and symptoms that may alert a practitioner to whether the athlete is likely suffering from MTSS or a tibial BSI. This can include timing, duration & to a degree the magnitude of symptoms.

One of my favourite clinical examination items is the length of tenderness on palpation along the posteromedial border of the tibia. Practitioners can have confidence that tenderness along the tibia of >5cm is likely MTSS (ie the runner may with guidance be able to continue running). However if the length of palpation tenderness is

Never thought I would interview a friend (let alone physio client) re doping in sports.

That is what did however happen this week.

I certainly do not condone performance enhancing drugs in sport at any level.

Beyond the flawed athlete there still remains a human being.
Trigger warning: it's a deep convo - if you need mental health support please seek help.
