A memorable day with a good mate.

Been trying to get on this route for years. It can be the nature of adventure routes to force you to make hard decisions.

I’ve stood on the approach ridge in rain, wind and the smoke of approaching bushfires. My brain wrestling with the spirits urge to push through the mountains warnings.

Yet when the time came, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Won’t forget this one in a hurry. Thanks for the smiles and good humour to make it worth the pain Darcy.

Took a solid 8-10m fall on the canoe last weekend with Kyle. Wild ride!

The day was planned to climb the scary sketchy! I needed to get out of my comfort zone a bit. Too much time climbing the same climbs lately. Kyle was keen but I had the sharp end all day so he doesn’t risk injury during his last firefighter training block before graduation.

Sure, let’s do it, the day was going well, and Kyle recommended having a crack at barbed wire canoe. A renowned scary and committing line. “It’s , kinda, safe” he says with too big of a grin to make me believe him.

The climbings good, but I’m not super feeling the small gear, so I take a few sits to work things out, but the climbing flows well and there doesn’t seem to be any stopper cruxes.

At the last stance before committing to the runout, managed to get in 4 rps and a 0 cam in a shallow slot. After semi committing I took a small fall on the gear from about 2m and everything held.

Working out the beta, up I went, eventually reaching a good stance on the arete about 3m above the gear. Kyle gave me some encouraging words, ever calm and collected, and after a few ups and downs I committed to the last few moves.

S**t, next stance isn’t as good as I thought, breathe, ball nuts, that’s next, s**t where are the ball nuts, ok got them. In the teeth, find the right one, in it goes, nope, it’s s**t, wrong size and a bit stuck, shake out, adjust ball nut, won’t come out, shake out, and….. ball nuts all fall out on the same biner and sail through@the air to the ground. Ohhhhhh fkkkk… shake out, nah I’m coming off, me “I’m coming off” , Kyle “ ahhhh s**t, you got it, uhh don’t come off” me “fk I’m off!”

Falling, falling, slight tug and “pop pop pop” Falling, “ shiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt” falling Kyle’s mind “f**k, I’ve killed him”, Falling, another tug, “pop” falling. Anddd boiingggg… “oh, hey Kyle, holllyy fkkkkk” Laughter from both of us. Then serious looks, “you ok?”, “uhh I think? So?”

All ended well, got scared, pushed out of the comfort zone, but this needed to happen to start progressing again out at frog. Huge thanks for kyle for the catch and encouragement.

Trusting in yourself, in your experience and ability, is a critical skill in not just climbing but in life.

Sometimes it seems like our options are limited. Take a deep breath, relax, and look around. There is usually more on offer when viewing from a place of calm than a place of fear.

In saying that, I wouldn’t have turned down some extra pads for this one.

Found a new little project! One of the best lines I have touched this trip for sure. Aesthetic, steep, technical and perfect rock.

Holy Matrimony V9 ***
Horseshoe Bay - Bowen, Qld

First session managed to unlock every move and link to the last hard throw in the roof. The move is big and committing though as the pump hits so might not be as close as it seems.

Fun regardless and can’t wait to come back up to try again in the future!

Need more pads!!!!!

Words can’t always express the places we travel, both in this world and within ourselves. These moments belong to just the self, and are the ones I treasure most.

Mount Stuart - Townsville - warlock (20).

Amazing day out climbing with an old friend! Good to catch up with Phil Clem in Townsville, had been too long but we quickly realised we were still the same young at heart thrill seekers of yesteryear.

Reminiscent of old memories climbing araps in pluggers and many an epic at frog, we took off for a new adventure.

Thanks for showing me around the classics mate.

Mount Stuart is a stunning mixed crag overlooking magnetic island and the city of Townsville.

Travelling over 1000km away from my roots as a crack climber to explore new climbing horizons in the granite slabs of... Oh, wait, crack boulder!!!

To the friends along the way, you are a welcome reprieve from the harsh landscapes of which I will always be called back to. Thank you.

Van life can be an escape for the solo adventurer. Quiet nights of self reflecting in a vast and untamed landscape. Yet this also creates an energy of the spirit which yearns to share experiences with others. As with all things, balance seems to be key. To tip either way creates a drive towards seeking the other. Busy cities push me to seek the open horizons, and wandering the unnamed mountains a thirst for human connection.

Isn’t it inspiring how much our fur babies simply enjoy life. From frosted 0 degree mornings to warm northern beaches, the spark to explore and adventure never leaves their mind.

So lucky to have her as a travel buddy.

First day in Bowen. What an inspired network of natural art. Featured granite bordered by the matching blues as the sky melts into the ocean.

No idea what I climbed today but it was a joy of positive steep rails and high friction.

Looking forward to exploring more with Roxy in the coming days before the weather turns.

Someone is happy to have a few rest days!! Managed to go check out a big dream line too up on the flight deck. Have a good flight up the face (second photo, not up Roxy’s face) and Orestes up the stemming corner and up up up! Fingers healing quickly, have movement and pains down to a measley 3/10. Definitely not broken! Should be back at it again in a few days. Sending weather love back north from gorgeous sunny days at araps.
