I have been working a lot with our newer instructors lately so I thought I’d share the 6 top things I wish I knew when I first started teaching Pilates…

1️⃣ Your voice matters more than your choreography.
I used to think the magic was in creative programming. Fancy transitions. Complicated sequences.
But clients don’t remember your choreography — they remember whether they understood you. Clear, layered cueing will always outperform something flashy but confusing. Clarity builds confidence. And confident clients come back.

2️⃣ Imposter syndrome doesn’t mean you’re not good.
It usually means you care.
I still sometimes feel nervous before teaching — and I’ve learnt that’s not weakness. It’s respect for the responsibility of holding a room. The instructors who think they’ve “mastered it” are the ones who stop growing.

3️⃣ Simple classes are often the best classes.
When you’re new, you think complexity equals credibility. It doesn’t.
Layering one foundational movement intelligently will get better results than racing through five variations. Clients crave structure and progression — not chaos.

4️⃣ You don’t need 100 new exercises.
There are only so many ways the body can move.
The power is in mastering the fundamentals — footwork, bridging, neutral stability, controlled articulation — and understanding why they work. Repetition builds skill. Skill builds confidence. Confidence builds loyalty.

5️⃣ Not every class has to destroy people.
Early on, I thought if clients weren’t shaking or sore for days, I hadn’t done enough.
That’s not sustainable training. Effective doesn’t have to mean exhausting. Our job isn’t to win the workout — it’s to build bodies that last.

6️⃣ Energy in the room is your responsibility.
The second you walk in, you set the tone.
Your pace. Your posture. Your presence.
Teaching isn’t just delivering exercises — it’s leadership. You’re holding space for people who’ve walked in carrying stress, insecurity, fatigue, pressure. That matters more than the playlist or the props.
