Win or loss, here is why debriefs matter.

Not just to analyse performance. It's about connection. To check in. To lead.

After a win, a debrief allows you to celebrate what worked, reinforce standards, and anchor the behaviours that created success.

After a loss, it becomes even more important.
Emotions are high. Frustration, disappointment, self-doubt, and sometimes anger.

As sports coaches, if we don’t create space for our athletes to process those emotions, they take them home. They bottle them up. They internalise them.

A strong debrief helps athletes leave the emotions at the venue - not carry them into their evening, their family environment, or the next training session.

This is where athlete wellbeing truly matters.

It’s an opportunity to:
- Acknowledge effort, even when the scoreboard didn’t reflect it
- Reflect on the learnings without blame
- Celebrate the positives
- Support athletes who had a tough game
- Check in with those who didn’t get the minutes they hoped for
- Regulate emotions and reset perspective

Not every athlete will speak up, especially after a hard loss or limited court time.

That’s where leadership counts.
Athletes don’t just need tactical feedback. They need emotional support. They need clarity. They need reassurance.
