Welcome to the Taiji Circle, where we can share the world of Taijiquan. Questions, answers and comments are most valued in a mutual endeavour to improve.

We teach traditional tai chi, bare hand and weapon forms. Teaching is provided in a friendly, creative and practical way to ensure quick progress.

THE MAGICIANS

Many come to taijiquan because they saw some masters perform incredible feats, and this mystery is what attracts them. As they start to get results from a practical approach, that mystery slowly dissipates and they loose interest, not realising that they have only just entered the door of taijiquan. More practice is now needed, for the magic and beauty come from the exquisite precision and design of the movements. Magic is no more than skills that are imperceptible.
Students also loose interest in the routine (form) when they have understood a few of the principles of taijiquan and acquired some skills. The routine is more than a sequence of applications. It is true that not all routines are equal, but a good one should contain useful information about angles, timing and strategy, based on real experience. The form is more than the sum of its parts. The form shapes us as much as we shape it. I believe a careful observation of some one doing the form can inform us about the quality of his jin.

EXPERIMENTING
After wandering for some time, I have now the feeling that we have reached the direct road that will take us to our destination. Unless we get distracted and lazy we should progress steadily, everyone at his own pace and according to the hard work one wants to put in. I have also the feeling that some students tend to get bored since they already know where to head. So from time to time it’s good to just stop, sit by the side of the road, ask ourselves a few questions, so that we can appreciate the beauty of the way with fresh eyes. This I call experiments. Experimenting according to the principles is still progress. We should not underestimate those who paved the way.

GOLD COAST SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP
Fine tuning and refining. Another excellent two-day workshop with Master Wu. A few new faces had a glimpse into the depth of taijiquan. And the usual suspects had a clearer view of the path forward.

TEN YEARS

Ten years ago, although myself a novice, I started to share Master Wu’s taijiquan system in the park to a couple of younger adepts because I thought it was an intelligent and efficient approach to the art. Two years later Luke created the Taiji Circle Page so that we could exchange and discuss ideas. A year later Tai Chi Nerang allowed us to practice at the back of their class. Others from different martial art backgrounds have since joined us and now it’s been a decade, and we continue to practice three times a week. Just a little bit of history of a small group in a small city on a big continent.
