🥋 A BIG THANK YOU TO TOM STARLING HANSHI ! 🥋

A huge thank you to Tom Starling Shihan, 8th Dan, for sharing his knowledge and experience with us at Sunday’s seminar.

Shihan Tom took us through a great range of practical techniques, including standing wrist locks, pain-compliance methods and off-balancing techniques all delivered with plenty of detail, insight and good humour.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the session, and it was fantastic to see martial artists from different styles coming together to learn, train and explore different principles and applications.

🙏 Thank you again, Tom Shihan, for giving us your time and sharing your many years of martial arts knowledge with us. It was a privilege to have you on the mat!

SANCHIN – KOKYŪ – TANDEN: Strength, Stability, and Inner Focus

Sanchin Kata is one of the oldest and most respected training methods in traditional Okinawan karate, particularly within the Naha-te lineage, which later evolved into styles such as Goju-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu. Unlike dynamic kata that emphasize speed and explosive movement, Sanchin focuses on controlled breathing, muscular tension, body alignment, and mental discipline. It is often called the "foundation kata" because it develops the essential qualities every karateka needs before mastering advanced techniques.

The word Sanchin (三戦) means "Three Battles" or "Three Conflicts." These battles symbolize the harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. Every movement performed during Sanchin is designed to strengthen these three elements simultaneously, creating a martial artist who is physically powerful, mentally calm, and spiritually disciplined.

One of the defining characteristics of Sanchin is Kokyū, the Japanese word for breathing. In Sanchin, breathing is not merely inhaling and exhaling. It is a deliberate process that synchronizes movement, muscle engagement, and concentration. Proper breathing increases intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), stabilizes the spine, and allows force to travel efficiently through the body. This breathing method transforms simple techniques into powerful expressions of whole-body strength.

At the center of this breathing practice lies the Tanden, also called Hara or Seika Tanden. Located approximately 7–10 centimeters below the navel, the Tanden is regarded in Japanese martial arts as the body's center of gravity and the source of balanced movement. Rather than relying solely on arm strength, karate practitioners learn to initiate movement from this center, allowing techniques to become more efficient, stable, and powerful.

The image highlights the concept of Bracing the Core, also known as creating Intra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP). By tightening the abdominal muscles while maintaining controlled breathing, the practitioner forms a stable internal structure. This protects the spine, improves posture, and creates a solid platform from which punches, blocks, and strikes can be delivered with greater force. A strong core also reduces unnecessary body movement, making techniques faster and more precise.

Proper upper body posture is equally important. The chest should remain open without excessive tension, while the shoulders stay relaxed and slightly pulled back. The elbows are naturally drawn toward the body, creating structural integrity and protecting the ribs. This posture allows force generated from the legs and hips to travel through the torso into the fists without energy loss.

Hand formation also plays a significant role. In Sanchin, the fists are tightly closed with correct wrist alignment to ensure maximum stability during impact. Even though the fists remain firm, unnecessary tension is avoided. Karate teaches that power comes from efficient body mechanics rather than excessive muscular force.

The stance, known as Sanchin Dachi, provides exceptional stability. The feet grip the ground while the knees remain slightly bent, creating a low and balanced center of gravity. Weight is distributed evenly between both legs, allowing the practitioner to resist external force while remaining ready to move in any direction. This stance strengthens the lower body, improves balance, and develops endurance through sustained muscular engagement.

Another important lesson of Sanchin is mental focus. Every breath, every step, and every contraction demands complete concentration. The practitioner learns to eliminate distractions and remain fully present in the moment. Over time, this mindfulness extends beyond the dojo into everyday life, helping individuals remain calm under stress, make better decisions, and respond rather than react to challenges.

In many traditional dojos, instructors perform Shime, a body-checking exercise during Sanchin practice. They gently push, strike, or apply pressure to different parts of the student's body to test posture, breathing, balance, and muscular engagement. This is not intended to cause pain but to ensure the body maintains proper structure under external pressure.

Although Sanchin appears simple compared to more dynamic kata, it requires years of dedicated practice to master. Every repetition refines posture, breathing, coordination, and mental discipline. Advanced practitioners often describe Sanchin as a lifelong study because even small improvements in breathing or alignment can significantly enhance overall martial ability.

The principles developed in Sanchin extend far beyond karate. Athletes, martial artists, and even individuals seeking better posture or stress management can benefit from learning controlled breathing, core stability, and mindful movement. These timeless principles demonstrate that true strength is built from a strong foundation rather than spectacular techniques.

Ultimately, Sanchin teaches that martial arts are not only about defeating an opponent. They are about mastering oneself. When breathing is controlled, the body becomes stable. When the body is stable, the mind becomes calm. When mind, body, and spirit work together in harmony, the karateka develops authentic strength that extends beyond the dojo into every aspect of life.
