🚨 SURCHARGE BAN STARTS TODAY!

And yep… I used AI to create this image 😉

This is something every salon owner needs to be thinking about.

If your EFTPOS provider charges you around 1.6% per transaction, that cost doesn’t magically disappear just because you can no longer pass the surcharge onto your client.

On a $120 service, 1.6% is $1.92.

It might not sound like much on one transaction… but add that up across every client, every week, all year and it becomes another cost of doing business.

So what does this mean for salon owners?

Your merchant fees need to become part of your cost of doing business and be accounted for when you set your salon prices.

Basically… we’re going back to how we did it 23 years ago.

Know your numbers.
Know what it costs to provide your services.
And make sure your pricing actually covers the cost of running your salon.

Because the bank will still be taking its little slice… 🐷💸

The people you surround yourself with can influence what you believe is possible for you.

When you’re building a business, taking a risk, putting yourself out there or doing something different, you need people around you who encourage the growth not constantly remind you of their own fears and limitations.

This is one of the biggest reasons I created the Indie Community.

I wanted independent hairdressers to have an environment where we celebrate each other’s wins, share ideas, ask questions, learn from each other and genuinely want to see each other succeed.

A room where someone else’s success doesn’t make you feel behind it shows you what’s possible.

And if you have people in your life who constantly bring negativity, doubt or limiting beliefs into your world, you don’t necessarily need to cut them out.

But you can choose how much access their opinions have to your dreams.

Protect your energy.
Raise your standards.
Surround yourself with people who encourage you to keep growing.

That’s what Indie is about

Indie started because I could see the hairdressing industry changing.

More and more hairdressers were choosing to step away from the traditional salon model and create businesses on their own terms.

Home salons.
Solo studios.
Freelancers.
Mobile hairdressers.
Chair renters.
Independent educators and creatives.

But while the way we worked was changing, the support available to us wasn’t.

And I wanted to change that.

After more than 20 years in the hair industry from being a hairdresser, salon owner and employer to educator, coach and now an independent hairdresser myself I know there is so much more to running a successful business than being great at hair.

You suddenly need to understand pricing, tax, super, insurance, marketing, social media, client attraction, boundaries, systems, numbers, compliance…and somehow still find time to actually do hair. 😂

That’s why I created Indie.

Indie is the home for independent hairdressers who want to build profitable, sustainable businesses while creating a way of working that actually works for their life.

We provide education, resources, coaching, expert support and a community of hairdressers who understand exactly what it’s like to run your own show.

But for me, Indie is bigger than business education.

It’s about changing the way independent hairdressers are seen within our industry.

When I created the Indie, I wanted independent hairdressers to have a place where they could bring their questions, share their wins and be understood by people who know what running a business behind the chair is really like.

Now, every Monday, I get to see that happen. Hairdressers from across Australia show up for each other, have honest conversations and celebrate the steps each person is taking. Some weeks we work through pricing or marketing. Once a month, we welcome a special guest, from accountants to mental health and wellbeing experts, so there’s always something valuable to learn and share.

But what means the most to me is the community

To every Indie who has joined a call, asked a question, shared what’s going on in their business or cheered someone else on: thank you. You’ve helped build this community into the place I hoped it could be.

I’ve spent 23 years in this industry, and supporting independent hairdressers Australia-wide is work I’m deeply proud to do.
