The Asian Pattern Committee has decided that Randwick’s 158-year-old Metropolitan Handicap will lose its Group 1 status.

Run as a G1 since 1979, it’s been a marquee target for staying prospects every spring for over four decades.

From now on, it runs as a Group 2.
