TAKE YOUR MEDICINE

A bad drive does not ruin your scorecard. The stupid recovery shot you try to hit directly afterwards is what ruins it.

I see it every Saturday. You hit it deep into the trees. Instead of simply chipping it out sideways back to the short grass, your ego takes over. You grab a 3-wood and try to thread the ball through a gap the size of a dinner plate to magically reach the green. You hit a trunk, the ball bounces further into the bushes, and now you are staring down a triple bogey.

A proper recovery shot has absolutely nothing to do with hitting the green. It is entirely about getting yourself back into a position where you can safely hit your next shot.
Take your medicine. Pitch it out to the fattest part of the fairway.

Give yourself a chance to make a bogey and keep your round alive. Ego golf costs you shots, scoring golf saves them.

STOP OVERCOMPLICATING TROUBLE SHOTS

When amateurs get into trouble, panic sets in, and they immediately try to hit the shot of their life to make up for it.

If you are sitting in the thick rough, in a divot, or on an awkward sidehill lie, the absolute worst thing you can do is worry about hitting the perfect yardage to a tucked pin.

When you are in a bad spot, your only goal should be making solid contact and getting out of trouble in 1 shot.

If you start trying to hit a perfect, high-spinning wedge from a terrible lie, you are going to thin it straight into the car park or chunk it a metre in front of you.

Simplify the problem. Focus entirely on the ball. Get your setup right, make sure you actually strike the back of the ball first, and advance it safely out of trouble.

Ugly and out of trouble is always going to score better than trying to be perfect and staying in the rough.

“Do you have any hobbies?”
Well… there’s golf. ⛳️😂

And honestly, I can’t think of a better one.

Know someone who would love golf if they did not have to deal with the uptight golf club nonsense?

Send this to your partner, a mate, or a colleague who has been talking about picking up a club.

I have upcoming dates for:
• Come and Try Golf: 60 minutes, $29, equipment provided, no experience needed, plus a drink at the clubhouse afterwards.

• Get Into Golf: A 6-week starter program that gets newcomers onto the fairways and gives them their own crew to play with.
Tag a mate who needs to give it a go, or share them this post.
