⚠️ BEEN SOLD A BATTERY AS MARINE COMPLIANT?
MAKE THE RESELLER PROVE IT!

Plenty of imported lithium batteries are being flogged by resellers as marine grade or suitable for boats. But a BMS, Bluetooth app, IP rating or IEC certificate doesn't prove compliance with Australian marine electrical safety requirements.

AS/NZS 3004.2 clause 2.9.3 sets out specific lithium battery system safety requirements, including individual cell voltage and temperature monitoring, early audible and visual warnings, and automatic disconnection.

Don't fall for the excuse that it's an installation standard, not a battery standard. That doesn't remove the battery system's safety requirements or excuse unsupported claims by resellers.

HOLD RESELLERS ACCOUNTABLE.

Ask for written evidence supporting their marine compliance claims. Get them to show how the BMS monitors EACH INDIVIDUAL CELL'S voltage and temperature, not just one sensor for the whole battery pack.

INSTEAD, CHOOSE:

✅ Serviceable and repairable

✅ APP proof of individual cell voltage AND temperature monitoring

✅ Early audible and visual alert gauge

✅ IP67 rated

✅ Documented compliance with applicable Australian marine electrical safety requirements AS/NZS 3004.2

ALREADY BOUGHT ONE?

If it was sold as marine suitable or compliant and the reseller can't back up those claims, you have rights under Australian Consumer Law.

ATTENTION BOAT OWNERS RUNNING LITHIUM ⚠️

Good to see AMSA reminding everyone about lithium battery safety and AS/NZS 3004.2. And before anyone says it's only for commercial boats, the standard covers recreational boats too.

Imported lithium batteries and resellers claiming marine compliance are facing scrutiny, with safety and compliance concerns currently being assessed by the ACCC.

Just because your battery has a BMS or says marine suitable doesn't mean it meets the Australian Standard. Cell monitoring, early warnings and automatic disconnection matter.

And to those installers asking who's enforcing it... AMSA regulates commercial vessels, state maritime authorities oversee recreational boat safety and the ACCC investigates misleading compliance claims.

If your reseller reckons it's marine compliant, ask them to prove it.
A sticker saying 'Marine Performance' isn't a compliance certificate.

• Does the battery and installation meet AS/NZS 3004.2:2014, including Clause 2.9.3?

• Can the supplier provide that in writing?

• Is the installer genuinely competent for marine electrical work, including ELV?

• If it’s for a DCV or vessel in survey, is there evidence to support that claim?

We've had our Green Marine Lithium battery and its dedicated on-board charger fitted in the boat for almost nine months now, and I've had a few people recently ask me for an update and a quick report on how it's performing... In a word, brilliantly! It hasn't missed a beat.
We opted for the 12 volt 80 amp/hour model from Green Marine Lithium. This incredibly light (9 kg) battery lives in the bow of the Snubby and powers only our old 55 pound thrust MotorGuide bow-mounted electric motor.
Several people were a bit surprised that we went for just an 80 amp/hour battery but, to be honest, even a full day on the water with a fair bit of electric motor work (mostly at about 20 to 60% thrust) rarely drops the charge below about 55 to 60%, so I guess we'd easily get two days from it. In practice, I'm able to recharge every night and the recharging time is incredibly fast. If I did more remote work and was likely to be away from mains power (or my Bluetti portable power station) for several days at a time, I'd probably be better off with either the 105 or 120 amp/hour models (11 & 14 kilos respectively), but honestly, the 80 is more than adequate for us.
I absolutely love this unit's on-board digital gauge and also the mobile phone app that allows me to instantly monitor the state of the battery, its remaining charge and the recharging process... It's a game changer.
Good, safe, reliable lithium batteries certainly aren't cheap (this one is around the $1,300 mark), but you get what you pay for. For me, the dramatic weight reduction compared to my old lead crystal monster has been a huge bonus, as has the fast recharging, steady power and ability to know exactly how much juice I have left at any time. I wouldn't go back...
