Richard Barnes Sensri was slso my first Aikido Sensei. At the time he was already in his 70’s and I remember being so inspired by this softly spoken gentle unassuming man. Thank you Richard Sensei.

Richard Barnes Sensei 1941-2025.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce my first Aikido Sensei passed away last week. Richard Barnes Sensei, a 6th Dan, was one of Sugano Sensei's first students. He began his aikido journey in 1965, the same year Sugano Sensei arrived in Australia. What was remarkable about this young man was that he travelled nearly 4,000 kilometres from Darwin to Sydney to learn from Sugano Sensei. He was appointed Area Representative of the Northern Territory, and until his passing, he was the chief instructor at the Francis Bay Aikido Dojo. Sensei Barnes was my mentor and an inspiration to me and many others, demonstrating years of commitment and dedication in sharing his extensive knowledge of aikido: a kind and gentle man with a passion so strong that he continued to teach into his eighties. His legacy lives on in many of his senior students.

To Sensei Barnes family Georgina, Sharon, Kenneth and family, Losing a family member is never easy, and my heart goes out to you. I’m thinking of you and sending my condolences and love.
