Life’s a trip.
Full circle moment for me recently.

From spending most of my childhood on a tennis court and the many fond memories that come with that in both my immediate and extended family.

It certainly brought a sense of nostalgia…

I had the pleasure of presenting to parents as part of a development day with Tennis Australia recently. I couldn’t help but see my own parents in the audience decades ago trying to find a way.

Topics included:

- Understanding a generation (the new norm)
- Implications of load (how much is too much?)
- Parents the high-performance managers of the future (establishing an eco-system)

Huge thanks to those in attendance and those who gave me the opportunity.

Amazing experience and one I was really grateful for.

Think about it.

College scholarships. Representative teams. Endorsement deals. Professional dreams.

The business of youth sport has never been bigger and it knows there’s no force stronger than a parent’s love for their child.

When the fear of missing out meets unconditional love, it’s easy to believe every opportunity must be chased.

But are we making decisions for our child’s development, or buying into a system that profits from the promise of what’s possible?

Have you ever wondered why the parents of those who “make it” aren’t always the loudest on the sidelines or the pushiest behind the scenes?

Often, they’re the ones creating space for growth, resilience, and ownership supporting the journey without trying to control it.

Success in sport isn’t always built on pressure. Sometimes it’s built on patience.

This creates curiosity while prompting parents to reflect on their own approach.

Where sporting parents get their information matters.

True athlete development requires credentialed, evidence-based guidance, not opinions or trends online.

Many governing bodies are making great strides under sound medical and professional advice, and that shouldn’t be overlooked.

As a parent where are you sourcing your information?…

Shout out to for sharing such information ✅

Not all specialisation is bad. There will come a time to narrow the focus.

But true success isn’t built on doing more… it’s built on knowing when, how and how much load to apply.

… to keep them in the game.

The right load develops athletes. The wrong load breaks them.

Comment ‘load’ and I’ll send you a free resource exploring how to do this successfully.

A multi-sport childhood builds better athletes.
But trying to go all in on every sport at once?

That’s where problems begin.

Too much volume.
Too little recovery.
Minimal progress.
Greater injury risk.

Development isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things at the right time through intentional planning.

The second most appearances in rugby league history.

372 games total. Multiple premierships, state and national representative.

The research will highlight those who succeed- and last aren’t the early maturers, or the early specialised.

So why is it youth sport in the modern era is filled with it?

The rush for success is real, as is the fomo associated with it.

Is this multi-sport athlete a thing of the past?

Consistency builds athletes.
Cramming breaks them.

Missed sessions often lead to unrealistic spikes in training load as kids try to “catch up”, increasing the likelihood of injury on growing bodies.

Youth sport isn’t about extremes.
It’s about consistent participation, steady development, and sustainable progress over time.
