It Carbon Ring Time

Carbon seal ring kits in Sea-Doo on a jet ski are critical for keeping water out of the hull where the driveshaft passes through. When they wear out or start failing, it can lead to some serious (and expensive) issues and potential flooding of your engine.

Make sure you are checking your Carbon Rings from time to time. Here's how you can check if your carbon seal ring might need replacing:

- Water in the Hull:
If you're noticing more water than usual collecting in the bilge or hull after riding, it could be a sign the carbon seal isn't sealing properly anymore. Do you have a salty residue around the carbon ring. This shows that salt water is getting in.

- Visible Dripping or Leaking Around the Seal:
With the jet ski out of the water but still in operation, observe the seal area. Any dripping water is a red flag. You can also do this by removing the seat and doing a test run in the water close to shore.

- Carbon Dust Residue:
Excessive black dust around the seal area means the carbon ring is grinding too much — a sign it’s worn. You can also sometimes see a black carbon line on the underside of the hull which is a sign of carbon ring deterioration.

- Age or Hours:
Generally, carbon seal kits should be inspected or replaced every 100–200 hours depending on riding conditions. If yours is close to that, it's smart to check it.

When to Replace:
If any of the symptoms above are present — especially water in the hull or loose fit — it's safer to replace the seal. A failure could lead to engine flooding.

Make sure you only use high quality parts otherwise you could see potential malfunction quickly.
