Central Coast Fly Rodders

Home of the Central Coast Fly Rodders Club........ The interest was bigger than anticipated, so a meeting was organised for the club to get started.

History
The Central Coast Fly Rodders' (CCFR), was formed out of a discussion on the Internet between a couple of Fly Fishos who felt that it was time that the Central Coast area had it's own fly fishing club. Previously the only fly-only clubs within the reach of the Central Coast were in Newcastle and Sydney, which meant members could not be as actively involved as they would like due to the tra

So we're visiting family friends in Toronto and I went and found a municipal park to fish.

I'd headed as far up the system as I could reasonably Uber on the basis that I was not equipped for steelhead or chinook and what I really wanted to do was go for a brookie as we don't have those at home.

This isn't a story of an expert strategy, just an idiot who on a super bright hot day and dirty coloured river had given up on the dry/dry-dropper and put a jig streamer on a 10'6" 2wt rod to see if I could find a brown trout in a shady hole... North American fish love meaty flies right?

This idiot had also forgotten sunscreen so unable@to find shade that might hold fish or give me a break I'd given up. As soon as the river hit the footpath, I planned to be out, head straight for the car park and summon the uber home... just in time to beat school rush hour traffic to boot.

Then everything changed... a solid lock-up followed by a long smooth deep pull out of the deepest bit of a corner pool towards the bank. As soon as I applied more resistance, totally unaware of what I was into other than this time it wasn't the bloody bottom and boom... all I saw was thick shoulders, way too broad to be a salmonid surely?.. and a big puff of silt and sand. I'd hooked a carp? I knew the Humber had them lower down... on a streamer? Maybe it was foul hooked if it was pulling like this. Either way battle was on to get this fish safely unhooked.

I can't remember how long we stayed in that top bend pool but as it turned and ran down streams two things happened...

1. I seriously questioned if it was even wise to try this on a 2wt.
2. I saw spots and an adipose. I literally screamed out loud. 26/05/2026

There’s something quite cool about this, the surprise and exhilaration of catching a PB unexpectedly!οΏΌοΏΌ
