We spend a lot of time talking about the future.
But most of that thinking is anchored to milestones:
- a goal,
- a date,
- a result we want to reach.
That’s not the future.
That’s just a point along the way.
The future exists beyond the milestone - and how leaders think about that difference matters more than ever right now.
I’ve been having a series of conversations recently about strategy, leadership, and what changes when we accept uncertainty as a permanent condition, not a temporary phase.
One theme keeps coming up: many teams are still leading for today and tomorrow, while the forces shaping the next decade are already in motion.
In this piece, I share a perspective on:
- Why anchoring strategy to certainty is increasingly fragile,
- What changes when we treat technologies like AI as infrastructure, not options and
- Why leadership today is less about predicting the future, and more about choosing which futures we’re willing to move toward - and away from.
Some love this work, for others it’s uncomfortable work.
In any event, it's necessary work.
Curious how others are thinking about their future horizon right now.

Most people think the purpose of leadership is to manage people and deliver results.
Cute… but wildly outdated.
The real purpose of leadership?
To change the weather, unlock the potential in others, and challenge everything that keeps your business playing small.
And when leaders do all three?
They stop inheriting the future… and start designing it.
Here’s the model I teach - simple, powerful, and designed to shake up how you think about leadership.
Which circle do you naturally sit in - and which one do you avoid?
If you're ready to lead differently, and design the future, let's talk.
Because the future isn't waiting...

Busy is a bully.
It keeps you dancing until you forget who picked the song.
We’ve all been there -
stuck in the vortex of busy, noise, meetings, decisions, fire-fighting…
working hard, but not working well.
And we tell ourselves:
“When the dust settles… when that project lands… when the madness stops… then I’ll step back and reset.”
Except you won’t.
Because the reset is needed INSIDE the vortex, not after it.
Here’s the thing:
Down on the dance floor, you can’t see the pattern.
You just keep matching the rhythm around you - faster, louder, busier.
Same moves. Same music. Same chaos.
The shift happens on the BLACONY.
One level up.
Clear air.
Perspective.
You see the whole room - the dynamics, the friction, the wasted energy, the blind spots… and the better rhythm waiting for you.
And here’s what leaders forget:
You don’t need a week offsite to get to the balcony.
You need two hours.
That’s it.
2 hours.
One interruption.
A complete reset - for you or your team.
I call them Accelerators because that’s exactly what they do.
Not coaching.
Not therapy.
Not kumbaya circles.
A strategic interruption → clarity → decisions → momentum.
I’ve opened space in my diary for the next 6 weeks.
If you want your time, your focus, your rhythm back, send me a message.
Or drop “BALCONY” in the comments and I’ll reach out.
Let’s get you out of the bully-dance and back into command.

Is this a quarter you'll never get back???
OK. It’s early November.
You’re busy. Everyone is.
You’ll deal with the "big stuff" in the new year, maybe after Australia Day, right?
Yeah... thing is, that “new year” you’re waiting for…
is 11 weeks away.
That’s almost 25% of your year.
Let’s be real, that’s an entire quarter you’ll never get back.
When you choose to wait, you choose waste.
Time. Energy. Focus. Money.
You don’t need another quarter like that.
You need a 2-hour reset - clarity, alignment, focus.
Two hours now means less firefighting, clearer priorities
and a team that finishes the year focused instead of fried.
In the last few weeks, one team reclaimed at least 2 hours per person, per week from one 2-hour Team Accelerator reset.
Some reclaimed more.
And the reclaim is compounding.
I’ve opened five Accelerator sessions before December 15.
Once they’re booked, that’s it - because impact requires focus.
Book your 20-minute Accelerator chat. https://calendly.com/capital_idea_sh/team-accelerator-20-mins
We’ll work out which Accelerator fits your team best.
You’ll walk away with insight and next steps - even if we don’t work together.
Be honest - how many hours will you waste this quarter waiting for “the right time”?

What happens when the goalposts move?
When the world changes faster than your plans, great leaders don’t panic — they adapt.
In my latest LinkedIn newsletter, "When the goalposts move: Leading when the horizon shifts", I explore how leaders can stay aligned and confident when everything’s changing.
Because the pace of change isn’t slowing - and neither can we.
And that kind of acceleration forces us to rethink what we’re aiming for. It pushes us to challenge activity-based goals, and move towards functional goals.
Because when our goals are rooted in purpose and adaptability, we’re not threatened by change – we’re fueled by it.

In a world of acceleration, confidence is the real competitive advantage.
Adaptive leaders build rhythm into uncertainty - what I call 'signal and scenario cadence'. It’s the muscle of sensing what’s changing, imagining what could happen, and deciding how to act before disruption hits.
That rhythm replaces control with confidence.
It’s what keeps leaders grounded when the ground keeps shifting.
Join me this Thursday for a conversation on how to lead through uncertainty - and turn disruption into strategic advantage.

The future doesn’t belong to the certain. It belongs to the adaptive.
The pace of change isn’t slowing - it’s accelerating.
And the leaders who thrive aren’t the ones chasing more data or control. They’re the ones learning how to read the signals and move with intention.
Adaptive leadership is the new edge.
It’s what builds confidence, not chaos, when everything around us is shifting.

Every dollar of investment matters right now.
But not every dollar delivers the same impact.
The truth is - the investment that multiplies beyond itself is the one made in leadership.
When you invest in your leaders, you unlock the potential of their people.
You create teams that can deliver today and ready the business for tomorrow.
Because leadership isn’t about managing what is.
It’s about shaping what’s NEXT.
That’s what we’re unpacking this Thursday, 6 November at Hub Martin Place.
An executive conversation about "Leading through Uncertainty" and what it really takes to turn disruption into strategic advantage.
