Instructor Spotlight – Sempai Mark 🥋

This week we’re proud to highlight Sempai Mark, whose journey in Kyokushin spans decades of dedication, growth, and strong mentorship.

👊 How it all started
Mark began his Kyokushin journey in 1986 at Nerang PCYC, at just 10 years old, after a school friend invited him along. While training in the junior's class under Sempai Kevin Veivers, he remembers looking into the senior class next door, watching Sensei Tony Bowden - a moment that left a lasting impression.

🔥 A moment that stood out
His very first grading remains unforgettable. Not only did he double grade to 9th Kyu, but he also witnessed a black belt grading - something he describes as the most exciting thing he had ever seen at the time.

💯 What’s kept him going
Inspired by the legacy of instructors like Frank Everett and guided by Sensei Kevin Veivers, Mark continues to train with purpose. For him, Kyokushin is about staying a lifelong student and sharing that same positive influence with others - alongside training with lifelong mates.

🧠 Advice for new students
“Nothing worth doing comes easily, but with effort and dedication comes continual, incremental improvements - giving a sense of achievement and confidence that is priceless.”

🥋 Favourite part of training
Kata - and most importantly, watching students grow and progress through their own journeys.

Strength is built - not given.

Before the dojo.
Before the belts.
Before the recognition.

There is discipline. There is repetition. There is sacrifice.

From striking trees to lifting iron…
From conditioning the body to sharpening the mind…
This is the path of true karate.

What you’re seeing here isn’t just training, it’s commitment to becoming unbreakable.

At our club Kyokushin Karate Gold Coast North, we honour the old ways while building strong modern warriors.
Every session, every strike, every drop of sweat it all counts.

Osu.

Happy 80th Birthday, Sensei Pete.

Your dedication to Kyokushin, your knowledge, and your willingness to pass it on have shaped all of us in the dojo.

You continue to lead by example, with discipline, humility, and still incredible speed in your movements.

A true testament to what lifelong training looks like.

Thank you for everything you have given to Kyokushin and to our community.

Osu.

In Kyokushin, we don’t just train for ourselves.

What is taught to us is passed on, not just technique, but discipline, respect, and the right habits.

Sosai taught that karate is a way of life.

That way is built through moments like this, guiding the next generation to be stronger, more capable, and more disciplined.

Training isn’t just physical.

Sosai Mas Oyama taught that karate is a lifelong pursuit of developing both body and character.

The dojo builds the body, experience builds understanding.

What books or lessons have influenced your journey?
