MY FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS
I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane in 2014 with a Masters Degree in Education (Career and Guidance Counselling). I am also a university trained teacher with a degree in education. This degree allows me to counsel people in schools, TAFE colleges, private and/or government agencies and in private practice. I currently work as a Gui
dance Counselor with children in schools who suffer from a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, self harming behaviors and social and cognitive difficulties in the classroom. My background in the education field is extensive. I spent 15 years after gaining my formal teaching qualifications in the employment industry, helping adults realize their full potential and assisting them in furthering their career goals. In the past 11 years, I have worked as a teacher in schools teaching children from Prep to Year 12 and also special needs in both sectors. More recently my Masters degree has allowed me to counsel both adults and children with a range of issues. Furthermore, I have experienced life's hardships, brought up two children, gone through the rearing of two teenagers who are now successful wonderful adults, been a single parent trying to cope on my own, suffered financial hardship, health issues and more. These experiences coupled with my extensive studies into psychology as a teacher and now a counselor, has not only enabled me to overcome obstacles and attain a better quality of life, but also motivated me to help others so that they may also find the same peace of mind and happiness that I have found. WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL COUNSELOR? It is not enough to have a degree only however. A counselor also needs certain personal qualities that enable people to trust them, to not feel judged and to open up and talk without fear. One must also feel that the counselor truly cares and is committed to helping them. These are definitely qualities that make me successful at what I do. I have "unconditional positive regard" for my clients and have a great desire to help them reach their career and life goals and have a calm mind and achieve a better quality of life. Additionally a counselor should be willing to research and keep up to date with the latest research, theories and practices and also be a member of a recognized affiliated organisation.
